SUMMARY:Plein Air / Urban Sketching in Watercolor with Iain Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Friday & Saturday\, May 22\, 23 & 24\, 2025.\n10 AM to 4 PM.\n$450\, includes lunch on Saturday. Supplies needed. \nHaving taught for many years both at the University level and in the workshop environment I’ve been able to put together a formula that will show you my process in full detail. My first goal is to make you comfortable. This is your time and I am there to support that. For most people painting is a private process\, doing so in a more public environment can create an anxious mind. I tend to try and keep things calm and will encourage you to let go of the fear of performance and embrace the act of creation in a relaxed environment. \n  \nWhen working from life or photography my goal in every scene is to ask myself why I chose the subject and how do I convey that idea on paper. I start by breaking a scene down into its major elements and then allow myself the freedom to reorganize and adjust for as strong a composition as possible. I build on this using thumbnail sketches where I “play” with different versions of the scene. Once I am settled on a workable idea I begin the process of building the scene. I am known for saying a couple of things. First- never let reality get in the way of a good painting. Second- do not let a pencil line tell you where to put your brush. Thinking this way takes a little pressure off of the need to perform well from the start. We are so very good at seeing the bad things in our paintings and terrible at noticing the good bits. I want to show you how to avoid that distraction and plan a painting so that you understand as much as you can before starting in with paint. \n  \nI cover as many different subjects as I can in each workshop. Skies\, landform\, water\, reflections\, the urban environment\, all deserve attention so that I can give you a base of knowledge you can work from well after I have left the building. I don’t want to create cadre of people that can paint in my style. I want to help you find your unique voice. You are the only one that can express the world in your way. I embrace that idea. \nI will of course show you tips and helpful ideas I’ve learned in my 25 year career. I will demonstrate how I work from the first scribble of a pencil to the final piece. It’s all about embracing your creative side and learning to letting go of the little voice that tells you that you can’t do it. \n  \nlain Stewart AWS / NWS is a Scots born watercolor artist and a signature member of the American and National Watercolor Societies among other state and international entities. He has also recently been inducted into the Whiskey Painters of America. \n  \nHis work has received numerous awards in international competition and hangs in many corporate and private collections. lain is a sought after watercolor instructor and juror and has been published in numerous books and periodicals. He has just finished production of his 5th instructional DVD. In 2021 his first book on painting; En Plein Air- Light and Color\, was published. \n  \nlain maintains a studio in Opelika\, Alabama\, and in addition to gallery work\, is an Architectural Illustrator with an international clientele and has taught watercolor and design drawing at Auburn University where he received his degree. lain is an International Brand Ambassador for Escoda Brushes\, Daniel Smith Watercolors\, and Stillman & Birn Sketchbooks. \n  \nTime & Date: Thursday\, Friday & Saturday\, May 22\, 23 & 24\, 2025. 10 AM to 4 PM each day.

DESCRIPTION:200 plus cyclists from Birmingham will participate in the global Ride Of Silence in Birmingham Alabama. SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky: Overture\, Concerto\, & Symphony
DESCRIPTION:An evening of Tchaikovsky! Featuring guest pianist Dina Kasman\, the ASO will perform 3 works from the legendary Russian composer. The Tempest\, based on the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare\, is similar in structure to Tchaikovsky’s better-known Romeo and Juliet fantasy-overture. It contains themes depicting the stillness of the ship at sea\, the grotesque nature of Caliban\, and the love between Ferdinand and Miranda. The love music is particularly strong\, being reminiscent of the love music from Romeo and Juliet. The orchestra will also perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring Dina Kasman\, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. \nFree benefit with every ticket: \nConductor’s Comments with Maestro Carlos Izcaray!\n\nConductor’s Comments is a unique opportunity to hear Carlos Izcaray provide insights to better understand and appreciate the selections you will hear and learn about the journey of the Symphony and artists working to make the performance come together. Join us at 6:15pm before the concert in the Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall (upper level\, next to main doors) of the Alys Stephens Center.

SUMMARY:BUZZ Live! in Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:Join our free BUZZ Live! talk show on May 8\, 6:00 pm Central\, at Red Mountain Theatre Arts Campus! The event will include hors d’oeuvres\, cash bar\, and an opportunity for the greater Birmingham community to meet and greet the stars in the four new episodes of our television show BUZZ: Christian Service Mission\, Holy Family Cristo Rey\, Sav-A-Life\, and Down Syndrome of Alabama. \nDuring our one-hour show – which will be live-streamed to our Facebook and YouTube channels – we’ll talk with the leaders of these Birmingham\, Alabama nonprofits\, and share clips from our upcoming BUZZ episodes that highlight their inspiring missions. These four episodes air Fridays in May (starting May 9) at 8:30 pm Central on Alabama Public Television. Doors open at 5:30 pm. \nFunding for our production comes from the Mike & Gillian Goodrich Foundation and Hoar Construction. \nAbout BUZZ in Birmingham: \nLaunched in 2020\, BUZZ airs on public television in Virginia – and on YouTube – and features the great work that nonprofits do in our communities\, and the marketing pros who donate their time and talent to help these life-giving organizations attract more donors\, volunteers and clients to their cause. A native of Birmingham\, BUZZ creator Michael Hemphill brought his show to his hometown in 2023. Follow us on Facebook\, Instagram\, LinkedIn\, YouTube. \nAlabama Public Television broadcast schedule: \nMay 9\, 8:30 pm – Christian Service Mission\nBirmingham native Michael Hemphill is back in his hometown highlighting and helping nonprofits on BUZZ! In this episode\, BUZZ focuses not only on the people served by Christian Service Mission\, but its volunteers who do the serving. Such as Dickey Atchison … best known as Bo Jackson’s high school football coach\, who suffered a deep depression after the untimely death of his wife of 49 years. He found healing through his volunteer work building homes for people in need through Christian Service Mission. \nMay 16\, 8:30 pm – Holy Family Cristo Rey\nAlgebra\, social studies\, English … Information Technology at HOAR Construction? Human Resources at Blue Cross Blue Shield? Such corporate work study programs are part of the school day at Holy Family Cristo Rey. Founded more than 50 years as a Catholic school for the Ensley community\, Holy Family adopted the “Cristo Rey” model in 2007 to better serve low-income\, underserved families in Birmingham. Students today graduate with more than a diploma\, but a resume of real-world work experience and invaluable business skills. \nMay 23\, 8:30 pm – Sav-A-Life\nWhat about what to expect when you’re not expecting? That’s the life-changing reality confronting countless women each year who find themselves unexpectedly pregnant … and afraid. In a country that increasingly considers itself prolife\, but offers increasingly fewer services once that life is born\, women have only weeks at most to decide what to do about their pregnancy. The nonprofit Sav-A-Life provides wrap-around services so that the clients who walk through their doors make life-affirming choices for themselves and their unborn children. \nMay 30\, 8:30 pm – Down Syndrome of Alabama\nAbout one in 700 children are born with Down syndrome. That’s 85 births each year in Alabama. The future for them\, and their caregivers\, is fraught with a variety of worries and stress. Through Advocacy\, Connections and Education\, the nonprofit Down Syndrome of Alabama envisions a state where individuals with Down syndrome are accepted and included for who they are. DSA provides hope and support to each person and their families with educational resources and networking opportunities throughout all stages of life.

SUMMARY:Mason Music’s Rock Band League Brings the Heat to Iron City
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Taco Mama and Otey’s Tavern\, Mason Music’s Rock Band \nLeague is turning up the volume for its Spring 2025 Battle of the Bands\, happening Sunday\, \nApril 27th at Iron City (513 22nd St S\, Birmingham\, AL 35233). Over 50 student musicians\, ages \n10 to 18\, will take the stage in front of a live audience to compete for the title of “Best Band” \n. \nThe concert will showcase ten bands: Gold Rush\, Sunburn\, TBA\, Close Proximity\, The Bridge\, \nDead Reckoning\, Where’s Kian\, Havoc\, Last Minute\, and Gridlock\, which were formed during \nthe 13 week Rock Band League season. These young rockers rehearse weekly with \nprofessional band coaches and are placed in groups based on age and experience to prepare \nfor their big moment under the lights. \n“Watching these kids grow from hesitant beginners to full-blown rockstars over the course of a \nseason is one of the best parts of what we do\, \n” says Mason Music founder and CEO Will \nMason. \n“This performance is the culmination of their hard work\, teamwork\, and a lot of sweat. \nAnd the energy they bring to the stage? Unreal. \n” \nDoors open at 12:30 PM for the openers division\, featuring middle school bands\, with their show \nkicking off at 1:00 PM. The headliners division\, featuring high school bands\, will open doors at \n3:30 PM with performances beginning at 4:00 PM. Admission is $10 at the door and the event is \nopen to the public. \nLocal musician guest judges Craig Stilley and Kaydee Mulvehill as well as George Carbonie\, \nwho is credited with co-creating the idea of Rock Band League\, will be on deck to crown the \nwinning band in each division with awards following each set of performances. Past judges have \nincluded local legends\, industry pros\, and regional touring artists. \nNow in its 19th season\, Rock Band League is one of Mason Music’s most popular \nprograms—offering students a real taste of what it’s like to rehearse\, perform\, and grow as a \nband. The program continues to grow with performances taking place at iconic venues in \nBirmingham like Zydeco\, Workplay\, Saturn\, Avondale Brewery\, and Iron City. \nAdditional details about Mason Music’s Rock Band League are available at \nrockbandleague.com. You can see photos of our student rockstars at our Fall 2024 Battle of the \nBands here. \nAlong with Rock Band League\, Mason Music has offered private lessons in guitar\, piano\, voice\, \ndrums\, and more to thousands of students of all ages and skill levels\, along with music camps\,group lessons\, and retail since it first opened in 2012. Mason Music can be found all over \nAlabama with studios in Cahaba Heights\, Mountain Brook Village\, Bluff Park\, Greystone\, \nWoodlawn\, and coming soon to Madison.
