SUMMARY:Lurks Behind Vol. 2
DESCRIPTION:“Lurks Behind Vol. 2” is the second installment in a powerful three-part dance series by Southern DanceWorks that transforms community stories into dynamic performance art. Set in Birmingham’s historic neighborhoods\, this year’s production centers on two of the ninety-nine communities rich with resilience\, pride\, and untold narratives. Through dance\, spoken word\, and multimedia design\, the event creates a living archive of neighborhood experiences\, shaped directly by residents through Heart Workshops: Talking and Moving. These intimate sessions allow community members to share personal reflections on pressing issues such as food insecurity\, housing\, and local identity\, which then become the emotional and choreographic foundation of the performance. \nDirected by internationally acclaimed choreographer Germaul Barnes and created in collaboration with a diverse team of Birmingham-based artists\, “Lurks Behind Vol. 2” redefines how the arts engage with social justice and civic dialogue. The performance blurs the line between audience and performer\, inviting the public not just to witness\, but to reflect on what lies beneath the surface of everyday places and people. By centering local voices and stories\, Southern DanceWorks brings movement to memory and meaning—offering a vision of the arts as both mirror and catalyst for community transformation.

SUMMARY:Capitalism and The Law with Michael DeBow
DESCRIPTION:“During many years on the Cumberland faculty\, I have taught our required courses in property and business organizations\, and in both classes\, I have tried to explain the larger capitalist framework that these areas of law help to support. This Article collects a number of illustrations and explanations I have used in my classes and expands upon them to offer law students what I hope is a useful orientation to capitalism as an institution… I hope to convince the reader that: (1) being a “business lawyer” is in fact a noble calling\, and (2) capitalism is well worth defending against its critics and enemies.”\nCurious to hear more? Please join us on Friday\, August 22\, at UAB’s Collat School of Business.\nMichael DeBow joined the Cumberland faculty in 1988. He regularly teaches courses in Property\, Business Organizations\, Administrative Law\, Legislation\, and Local Government.\nProfessor DeBow is a native of Tupelo\, Mississippi. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Alabama (1976\, 1978). He graduated from the Yale Law School in 1980\, and is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.\nDeBow’s career included a stint in private practice in Washington\, D.C.\, followed by a judicial clerkship with Judge Kenneth W. Starr of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 1983-84. DeBow then served as an attorney-advisor to Federal Trade Commission chairman James C. Miller III (1984-85)\, and a special assistant to Assistant Attorney General Douglas Ginsburg\, in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (1985-86). He began his teaching career at the University of Georgia business school\, where he taught for two years prior to coming to Samford.\nFrom 2000 to 2004\, DeBow also acted in a part-time capacity as special assistant for legal policy to Alabama attorney general Bill Pryor. He was a visiting professor of law at George Mason University in 1999. He was a (nonresident) Salvatori Fellow of The Heritage Foundation during 1993-95\, and a member of the executive committee of the Association of Private Enterprise Education during 1995-99. DeBow attended summer institutes in quantitative methods for law professors (George Mason Law & Economics Center\, 1990)\, Austrian economics (NYU Department of Economics\, 1997)\, and the study of freedom (Templeton Foundation Freedom Project\, 2000). In 2008 he was named an Adjunct Fellow of the Alabama Policy Institute.\nProfessor DeBow has taught several undergraduate courses at Samford\, including one which received a supporting grant from the John Templeton Foundation. Most recently\, he taught an undergraduate course in law and economics for the Samford’s Brock School of Business. He has also taught public health law for the UAB School of Public Health on several occasions.\nDeBow’s articles have appeared in such journals as the Texas Law Review\, Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy\, Regulation\, Policy Review\, The Freeman\, and the Journal of Law & Politics. He co-edits the Federalist Society’s Pre-Law Reading List and its annotated bibliography of conservative and libertarian legal scholarship.

The sword is perhaps one of the most commonly associated items produced by a blacksmith. For thousands of years this tool has helped shape the world and conquered nations\, even today it is still romanticize through literature and entertainment. Within this class\, students will follow along with the professor and will challenge students to use their skills in the construction of a historically accurate sword. Students will create every piece from start to finish with all the tools and supplies they will need at their disposal. In part I of the class\, Students will start by forming the basic shape of the sword\, followed by forging the hilt which include components such as the handle\, pommel\, and cross guard and various hardware in part II. In part III students will work on crafting the handle working with leather and woods and perhaps horn\, bone\, antler\, or ivory- then working on fitting everything. Finally at part IV the blade and components will go through various final heat treatments and acid washes before being put together as a final piece. This course is an advanced lesson involving more work due to its larger size and multiple step process. It is strongly recommended that those wanting to take the class first consider attending a knife course prior to this class so that it’s understood what to expect when making a sword.\n \n\n NOTE: Forging a Sword is a 3 day course. This class will require students to meet at the very least on four separate days with the professor. It will be important to use the time between classes meetings for some out of class work. As such students will have access to the shop during Red Mountain Makers regularity scheduled hours of operation between meetups. It is strongly recommended that this extra time is utilized to refine work that time will prohibit during class. As a bonus\, One month free access to the shop will be granted after class resolves!\n \n\n Task involved – (drawing/stretching\, measuring\, hammering\, beveling\, forming\, bending\, cutting\, penning\, woodworking\, filing\, slitting\, punching\, grinding\, sanding\, sharpening\, assembling\, burn fitting\, fluting\, carving\, oil quenching\, normalization\, tempering\, heat bluing\, oiling\, this is it\, the ultimate blacksmith class!\n \n\n Homework- continue to refine by rough grinding and sanding the shape to the set parameters.\n \n\n \n \n \n About the Instructor\n \n :\n \n Classes taught by\n \n Kenneth of Fire & Brimstone Forge\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Age\n \n : there are no age restrictions to the class. SUMMARY:Grease Sing-A-Long – Summer Movie
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nPlan Your Visit \n \nDoors open 6 p.m.\, show at 7 p.m. \nTickets are $13 each (including sales tax and processing fees). Children ages two and younger are free of charge. Seating is general admission\, first come\, first served. Doors open one hour before showtime\, and the screening will begin with a sing-along accompanied by the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. \n1978 | Rated PG | 1 hour 50 minutes\nGood girl Sandy Olsson and greaser Danny Zuko fell in love over the summer. When they unexpectedly discover they’re now in the same high school\, will they be able to rekindle their romance? \nSong lyrics will be displayed on the screen during the film so fans can sing along! \nWhy aren’t there more movies this summer?\nLike last summer\, we have made the difficult decision to close the Alabama Theatre for several weeks this summer to conduct a major maintenance project. This year we will replacing the electrical switchgear that brings electricity into the Alabama Theatre direct from Alabama Power. This switchgear is original to the theatre and was installed in 1927\, so it’s time for an upgrade! This project is many years in the making and will require the building to be without power for days and weeks at a time. We will be closed for several weeks mid-July through mid-August to complete the work! \nBecause of this work\, we unfortunately are not able to present a full Summer Film Series this year. Truthfully\, the summer movies are typically not a profitable event for us. Because of our limited schedule this year\, we have decided to show two fan favorites to make sure that the largest group of fans gets to enjoy a movie at the Alabama. We are hopeful that by having a few well attended movies\, we will be better able to achieve our mission of preserving and protecting the Alabama Theatre for years to come. \nParking Info:\nThe Alabama Theatre is not responsible for parking and does not provide any free parking.\nParking meters are free after 6pm on weekdays and all day on Saturday and Sunday.\nPlease be aware of tow-away zones. Lots marked “permit parking only” are tow-away zones and they will tow your vehicle at your expense. \n \n

SUMMARY:Paste Paper Pocket Sketchbooks with Rene Sears
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 14\, 10 AM to 12 PM\n$25\, most supplies included\nBeginner and Intermediate Levels\nLimit 10 Students \nPaste paper has a long history in bookbinding. When books first started to be mass produced\, paste paper provided a quick and easy way to produce beautiful endpapers for the quantity of books being printed. It’s like fingerpainting brought to the next level! \n  \nIn this workshop\, we will create paste paper out of starch paste and acrylic paint using combs and stencils to create unique decorative paper. We will then create a reinforced cover and use a simple pamphlet stitch to create small sketchbooks or journals\, perfect for your pocket or purse. \nI will demonstrate decorative techniques and we will make several papers. While those are drying\, I will demonstrate how to build a reinforced (semi-hardback) pamphlet cover with room for one or two signatures or drawing paper. \n  \nTime & Date: Saturday\, June 14\, 2025. 10 AM to 12 PM. \n
