SUMMARY:City Center Art Spring 2026 - Studio art classes for young artists in grades 2 – 12
DESCRIPTION:City Center Art is Space One Eleven’s afterschool studio art program for students of all skill levels and is designed to build visual communication skills and foster creative thinking. Throughout the semester\, young artists learn the elements of art and principles of design\, strengthen foundation skills\, and further their understanding of art criticism\, art theory\, and art history. \nTeaching artists balance instruction between creating and responding—young artists make\, discuss\, and write about their work—thereby facilitating a transformative learning experience for young artists. \nSpace One Eleven’s philosophy is to provide an environment in which young artists can learn\, create\, explore\, and forge their own path into the world of art. All CCA young artists participate in the end of year exhibition and open house at the end of the Spring Semester. \nStudents are welcome to join the art class any time during the school year if seats are available. Class cost will be pro-rated for those who join later in the semester.

SUMMARY:Space One Eleven presents art exhibitions by El Paso artist José Villalobos and local artist Jason Tanner Young
DESCRIPTION:Space One Eleven\npresents \n“Navegando la Masculinidad de la Frontera / Navigating the Border’s Masculinity“ by José Villalobos \nand \n“see saw sawn” by Jason Tanner Young \nOpening reception with the artists\nThursday\, February 19\, 2026\n5:30 to 7:00 pm \nSpace One Eleven Art Center\n2407 Second Avenue North\nDowntown Birmingham \nJosé Villalobos is a multidisciplinary artist exploring identity\, queerness\, and cultural heritage through sculpture\, performance\, and installation. Growing up between El Paso\, Texas\, and Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico\, he confronts the conflicts between tradition\, faith\, and sexuality within Mexican and American cultures. Rooted in personal experience\, his practice challenges machismo and the violence of assimilation\, transforming materials and symbols to reclaim queer visibility. Villalobos has exhibited nationally and internationally and is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant. Recently he became a Trellis Art Fund Stepping Stone Fellow. His work affirms resilience\, tenderness\, and the power of self-expression within queer and borderland communities. \nFor the exhibition “Navegando la Masculinidad de la Frontera / Navigating the Border’s Masculinity\,” Villalobos presents a collection of new and past works that create a dialogue about masculinities within Norteño culture\, its subcultural predecessors\, and related historical movements. Villalobos’ aesthetic often combines the rugged iconography of the West (boots\, cowboy hats\, leather\, ropes) with the flamboyance\, glitter\, and vulnerability of queer expression. The result is a powerful tension: the imagery of strength\, control\, even violence (e.g.\, rodeo\, bull-taming) juxtaposed with fragility\, costume play\, and critique of the structures that define “manhood.” \nJason Tanner Young received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2008. He is currently an Associate Professor of Art and director of the Sculpture concentration at the University of Montevallo. Young previously worked at Ohio University\, where he taught courses in Sculpture + Expanded Practice as well as the Foundations Department. \nYoung was awarded the Pentaculum Scholarship in Woodworking to participate in the week-long residency\, Spring Pentaculum\, at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (2022). At the University of Montevallo he received a Summer Stipend for Pre-Tenured Faculty (2020)\, and he has also received a Teaching and Scholarly Projects Grant (2022). \nYoung shows his work extensively\, and has been included in exhibitions at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center (Mobile\, AL)\, Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment (Huntsville\, AL)\, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (Gatlinburg\, TN)\, The Sculpture Center (Cleveland\, OH)\, Axis Gallery (Sacramento\, CA)\, Weston Art Gallery (Cincinnati\, OH)\, Manifest Gallery (Cincinnati\, OH) the Young Sculptors Competition at Miami University (Miami\, OH)\, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (Montgomery\, AL)\, Visual Art Exchange (Raleigh\, NC)\, Evansville Museum (Evansville\, IN)\, and Rosalux Gallery (Minneapolis\, MN) among many others. \nThe exhibition will continue\nFebruary 20 through April 17\, 2026. \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm\, and by appointment. \nAdmission is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Ladies Rock Camp Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Ladies Rock Camp is an intensive weekend program put on by Girls Rock Birmingham for female-identifying and non-binary folks 18 years of age and older that is redefining the term “lady” by creating an environment that is the antithesis of what we have been told it means to behave as one. Programming for Ladies Rock is similar to what girls do during our summer program: learn an instrument\, form a band\, write a song\, and perform your song live – in just a weekend! You’re invited to cheer on the bands of Ladies Rock Camp at our showcase March 1 at Saturn! You’ll hear the results of the hard work these women put into learning\, writing\, and honing their new craft as ROCKSTARS. Some very special guests will also be joining us. We want a HUGE turnout for these awesome folks so plan to be there!\nTickets are $10 and are available now through Saturn Birmingham. All proceeds go to help Girls Rock Birmingham bring empowering events to young girls. Kids under 18 are admitted FREE.

SUMMARY:DOR: A Romanian Festival
DESCRIPTION:DOR: A Romanian Festival\, 2nd Edition\n“Confluence: Where Romania Meets the World”\nSunday\, September 14\, 2025\, 4:00 to 10:00 PM\nThe Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\n3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL 35124 \nMusic4Romania (www.music4romania.org) cordially invites everyone from the Birmingham community\nand beyond to come out to experience the vibrant sights\, sounds\, and tastes of Romania at the 2nd\nedition of DOR: A Romanian Festival to be held at The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\n(www.saintfrancisindiansprings.org) on Sunday\, September 14\, from 4:00 to 10:00 PM! Everyone is\ninvited and welcome! \nEntitled “Confluence: Where Romania Meets the World\,” this year’s festival aims to celebrate\nRomanian culture as part of humanity’s vast cultural organism\, where every tradition both receives and\ngives. Romania stands as Europe’s great cultural crossroads\, and many international influences have\nwoven themselves into a distinctive national identity. From the painted monasteries of\nMoldova—whose vibrant frescoes blend Byzantine spirituality with local traditions—to the Romanian\nlanguage\, a Romance island surrounded by Slavic and Hungarian seas\, Romania embodies cultural\nsynthesis. Shaped by Roman\, Byzantine\, Ottoman\, and Austro-Hungarian influences\, the country has\nabsorbed and transformed each while maintaining its unique character. Every folk melody echoes with\nHungarian harmonies\, every wooden gate bears Ottoman geometry\, every dish tells migration stories –\nTurkish-inspired mici\, Austrian schnitzel becoming șniţel\, Greek moussaka transformed into musaca.\nLanguage weaves threads—Romanian “cafea” from Turkish “kahve” from Arabic “qahwa”—connecting\nBucharest to Istanbul to Ethiopia. The painted churches of Voroneț and Moldovița showcase artistic\ntechniques that traveled from Constantinople\, while monastery walls inspired Viennese Art Nouveau. \nThrough interactive activities including a fun Romania 101 country presentation\, a Romanian language\nsession\, traditional music\, dancing\, literary readings\, children’s activities\, workshops\, art exhibits\, an\naward-winning Romanian movie\, and a seated dinner (offered at a charge of $25/person\, children under\n12 free)\, the festival hopes not only to celebrate Romania’s dynamic cultural heritage but also to actively\nand purposely promote and encourage cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. \nFor more info and to RSVP for the seated dinner\, please email Dr. Alina Voicu at\navoicu1970@gmail.com or text at (205)807-5814. Dinner payments (of $25.00 person\, children under\n12 free) must be received by September 7\, check made payable to Music4Romania – please mail to Dr.\nAlina Voicu\, The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\, 3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL\n35124. \nFESTIVAL PROGRAM\n4:00– 4:45 PM – Romanian Mosaic: International Threads\nLearn interesting facts about Romania’s history and traditions in a presentation that will highlight the\ncountry’s culture as a meeting point of different international influences. Information about Romania’s\npainted monasteries\, a Romanian language session as well as a segment highlighting two Romanian\nwomen of great beauty and strength\, Queen Maria and Princess Ileana\, will also be included. The\nsession will conclude with poetry time featuring award-winning poet Alina Ṣtefӑnescu. \n4:45-5:15 PM – Cultural Workshop\, Children’s Corner\, Art Exhibits\, Documentary\, and Silent Auction\n#1: Turkish Coffee Making and Fortune Telling Workshop\nA hands-on interactive experience of the old Romanian tradition of coffee making (which was imported\ndirectly from the Ottoman culture)\, the workshop will guide the participants through the entire process\,\nfrom grinding the beans to making an authentic Turkish brew to understanding the meaningful ritual of\nconnection and hospitality beyond the experience.\n#2.
