SUMMARY:City Center Art (CCA) Studio art classes for young artists in grades 2 – 12\, Fall semester 2025
DESCRIPTION:City Center Art is Space One Eleven’s afterschool studio art program for students of all skill levels and is designed to build visual communication skills and foster creative thinking. Throughout the semester\, young artists learn the elements of art and principles of design\, strengthen foundation skills\, and further their understanding of art criticism\, art theory\, and art history. \nTeaching artists balance instruction between creating and responding—young artists make\, discuss\, and write about their work—thereby facilitating a transformative learning experience for young artists. \nThrough our scholarship application\, art class fees are based on a sliding scale. As a result\, families may qualify for free or reduced tuition through the generosity of foundations and private contributors. \nGrades 2-3\nTuesdays\, September 2 – December 16\, 2025\, 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm \nGrades 4-5\nMondays\, September 8 – December 15\, 2025\, 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm \nGrades 6-8\nWednesdays\, September 3 – December 10\, 2025\, 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm \nGrades 9-12\nSaturdays\, September 6 – December 13\, 2025\, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

SUMMARY:DOR: A Romanian Festival
DESCRIPTION:DOR: A Romanian Festival\, 2nd Edition\n“Confluence: Where Romania Meets the World”\nSunday\, September 14\, 2025\, 4:00 to 10:00 PM\nThe Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\n3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL 35124 \nMusic4Romania (www.music4romania.org) cordially invites everyone from the Birmingham community\nand beyond to come out to experience the vibrant sights\, sounds\, and tastes of Romania at the 2nd\nedition of DOR: A Romanian Festival to be held at The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\n(www.saintfrancisindiansprings.org) on Sunday\, September 14\, from 4:00 to 10:00 PM! Everyone is\ninvited and welcome! \nEntitled “Confluence: Where Romania Meets the World\,” this year’s festival aims to celebrate\nRomanian culture as part of humanity’s vast cultural organism\, where every tradition both receives and\ngives. Romania stands as Europe’s great cultural crossroads\, and many international influences have\nwoven themselves into a distinctive national identity. From the painted monasteries of\nMoldova—whose vibrant frescoes blend Byzantine spirituality with local traditions—to the Romanian\nlanguage\, a Romance island surrounded by Slavic and Hungarian seas\, Romania embodies cultural\nsynthesis. Shaped by Roman\, Byzantine\, Ottoman\, and Austro-Hungarian influences\, the country has\nabsorbed and transformed each while maintaining its unique character. Every folk melody echoes with\nHungarian harmonies\, every wooden gate bears Ottoman geometry\, every dish tells migration stories –\nTurkish-inspired mici\, Austrian schnitzel becoming șniţel\, Greek moussaka transformed into musaca.\nLanguage weaves threads—Romanian “cafea” from Turkish “kahve” from Arabic “qahwa”—connecting\nBucharest to Istanbul to Ethiopia. The painted churches of Voroneț and Moldovița showcase artistic\ntechniques that traveled from Constantinople\, while monastery walls inspired Viennese Art Nouveau. \nThrough interactive activities including a fun Romania 101 country presentation\, a Romanian language\nsession\, traditional music\, dancing\, literary readings\, children’s activities\, workshops\, art exhibits\, an\naward-winning Romanian movie\, and a seated dinner (offered at a charge of $25/person\, children under\n12 free)\, the festival hopes not only to celebrate Romania’s dynamic cultural heritage but also to actively\nand purposely promote and encourage cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. \nFor more info and to RSVP for the seated dinner\, please email Dr. Alina Voicu at\navoicu1970@gmail.com or text at (205)807-5814. Dinner payments (of $25.00 person\, children under\n12 free) must be received by September 7\, check made payable to Music4Romania – please mail to Dr.\nAlina Voicu\, The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\, 3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL\n35124. \nFESTIVAL PROGRAM\n4:00– 4:45 PM – Romanian Mosaic: International Threads\nLearn interesting facts about Romania’s history and traditions in a presentation that will highlight the\ncountry’s culture as a meeting point of different international influences. Information about Romania’s\npainted monasteries\, a Romanian language session as well as a segment highlighting two Romanian\nwomen of great beauty and strength\, Queen Maria and Princess Ileana\, will also be included. The\nsession will conclude with poetry time featuring award-winning poet Alina Ṣtefӑnescu. \n4:45-5:15 PM – Cultural Workshop\, Children’s Corner\, Art Exhibits\, Documentary\, and Silent Auction\n#1: Turkish Coffee Making and Fortune Telling Workshop\nA hands-on interactive experience of the old Romanian tradition of coffee making (which was imported\ndirectly from the Ottoman culture)\, the workshop will guide the participants through the entire process\,\nfrom grinding the beans to making an authentic Turkish brew to understanding the meaningful ritual of\nconnection and hospitality beyond the experience.\n#2. Children’s Corner: Story & Mӑrţișor Time\nChildren and all young at heart are invited to listen to one of Queen Maria’s beautiful children’s stories\,\nread by poet Alina Ṣtefӑnescu and her family\, and also to make a Mӑrţișor or a Romanian braceiet to\ntake home. A Mӑrţișor is a trinket attached to a red and white string that symbolizes spring and rebirth\nand is traditionally given to loved ones on March 1 st as a talisman for new beginnings\, health\, and luck.\n#3. Mihaela Noroc Photo Exhibit: The Atlas of Beauty & Beyond\nEnjoy the beautiful photography of Mihaela Noroc\, acclaimed author of three exceptional photo albums:\nThe Atlas of Beauty: Women of the World in 500 Portraits\, The Power of Women\, and Girls’ World.\nMihaela has been traveling the world for more than one decade\, capturing the unique beauty and\ndiversity of women around the globe and listening to their stories with the aim of promoting hope and\nlove. Several of the exhibited photos are part of her newest project\, Romanian Women\, which has not\nyet been published.\n#4. Sacred Traditions Exhibit: Romanian Heritage through Folk Costumes\, Painted Eggs\, and Icons\nAdmire Romania’s rich cultural tapestry through colorful folk costumes\, Easter eggs painted with\nsymbolic motifs\, and various Orthodox religious objects and icons in Byzantine style.\n#5. SUMMARY:InToto / Firehouse Shelter Book Release Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:InToto Creative Arts\, in partnership with Firehouse Shelter\, announces the release of “Unsheltered Expressions: Binding Hope\,” a book that showcases art and writings created by shelter guests. Developed through weekly community arts workshops with local nonprofit InToto Creative Arts\, the book provides a platform for voices often overlooked and invites the community to engage with the realities of homelessness through creative expression.\nSupported by the City of Birmingham and Create Birmingham through their Community Arts Grant\, this project will culminate in a community book release celebration on Thursday\, May 29\, 2025\, from 5-8 PM at the beautiful Clubhouse on Highland. The evening will feature an art exhibit and live poetry readings by book contributors. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in hand binding the book with guidance from artist/UAB Professor/longtime InToto support Doug Baulos\, creating a collective experience that reinforces community connection. Contributing artists will be compensated for their contributions\, supporting their journeys toward self-sufficiency. The event is free and open to the public and includes complementary food and drink. InToto will graciously accept donations to support our healing arts programming.\nBy showcasing the work of these talented individuals\, we can challenge societal perceptions around homelessness. The book will serve as a reflection of the humanity that connects us all\, regardless of our circumstances. By offering a platform for self-expression\, “Unsheltered Expressions” empowers contributors to claim their identities as artists\, giving them a sense of agency and visibility within the community. In addition to showcasing their works\, the project fosters mutual understanding and empathy\, emphasizing the importance of building relationships and dismantling social barriers. It is a reminder that art can serve as both a tool for personal healing and a powerful form of advocacy.\nInToto Creative Arts is a Birmingham-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing creative platforms for individuals facing severe hardship such as homelessness\, PTSD and other mental illness\, and disability. Through a range of arts programs\, InToto works to foster emotional healing\, self-expression\, and community connection. InToto’s programs serve as a safe space for individuals to explore their identities and share their stories through various art forms. InToto brings regular weekly healing arts programming to 5 community partners: Firehouse Shelter\, Pathways Home\, Faith Chapel Care Center\, The 1920 Club\, and the VA.\nThe Firehouse Shelter is Birmingham’s leading organization dedicated to serving men experiencing homelessness. Through a combination of emergency shelter\, supportive housing\, and community services\, Firehouse Shelter offers resources and programs to help guests transition to stable housing and employment. Their work focuses on not just meeting immediate needs\, but also providing long-term solutions for individuals to reclaim their independence and thrive. InToto is deeply ingrained in the culture of the Firehouse\, providing 4 weekly classes year-around in visual art\, creative writing\, movement\, music\, and drama and supporting guests’ journeys towards stability and healing.\nAdd this event to your Google calendar: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/event…\nFor more information about the event\, please contact InToto Creative Arts at (205) 201-0011 or email info@intotocreativearts.org.

SUMMARY:Sunday Story Seven - Storytelling Open Mic with MATT DAVIS and special musical guest JANET SIMPSON
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling Variety Show + Open Mic\nFeatured Storyteller Matt Davis\nStories & Songs with special guest Janet Simpson\nhosted by Becca Rothman \nAct I – Open Mic storytelling. Put your name in the hat for a chance to share a personal\, true story onstage. \nAct II – Our featured storyteller (and critically-acclaimed\, world-renowned comedian) Matt Davis will share a ten-minute prepared story. \nAct III – Stories and Songs with Janet Simpson \nJanet Simpson is a force of intuition. The Birmingham legend has shared her presence as a deep\, patient listener and her fierce power as a singer\, guitarist\, and keyboardist to bands like Wooden Wand (World War IV)\, Delicate Cutters\, Teen Getaway\, and Timber. But on Can I See You Tonight (out soon via Cornelius Chapel Records)\, Simpson’s unmatched prescience is channeled toward her own visions\, expansive yet spellbindingly intimate. The follow-up to her stunning solo debut Safe Distance (2021)\, it’s a wryly observant alt-country tapestry with frayed edges that gesture toward Simpson’s history in DIY and punk scenes. Her talent as a bandleader shines even brighter on this second album as she taps freely into that restless collaborative spirit\, weaving worn-in\, effortless folk rock arrangements with her band. The songs on Can I See You Tonight are haunting stills in time\, shot through with longing – the lyrics haiku-precise\, the band dialed in to one another\, and to Simpson\, her deep well of a voice brimming over. \n* * * * * \nMore details:\nHave you always wanted to tell a story onstage? Or do you prefer to listen while others share? Either way\, join us at the monthly storytelling variety show the Sunday Story Seven. The open mic is open to new and seasoned storytellers – just put your name in the hat for a chance to tell a 5-minute true tale. No notes\, no theme – just you and the mic! SUMMARY:BEETLEJUICE
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Birmingham. \nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!
