SUMMARY:Got Sun? Grow Food!
DESCRIPTION:| \n \n \n\n\n\nThink you need a big backyard to grow vegetables? Think again! Learn how to grow fresh veggies in any sunny spot—from suburban gardens to patios and balconies. Advanced Master Gardener Karen Mitchell will discuss how to choose the best vegetables for your space and inspire you with easy\, rewarding options for a spring and summer garden. Perfect for beginners and small-space gardeners. \nLocation: Adventure Classroom \nInstructor: Karen Mitchell\nKaren Mitchell retired from AT&T in 2008 after 31 years. She was certified as a Master Gardener in 2009\, and her first project was spearheading the initial planting of the Hand in Hand Children’s Garden at United Ability of Birmingham. She is very interested in growing vegetables (where sun permits) in small spaces\, in raised beds\, or any container she deems fit. In past years\, Karen chaired the vegetable booth at the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ Spring Plant Sale\, and deems herself a vegetable gardening evangelist. Karen also loves hydrangeas and is the past president of the Alabama Hydrangea Society. Concerns for watering hydrangeas and other plants during drought motivated her to install hose-end irrigation tubing with adjustable emitters to water plants at their base. \n\n\n \n \nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. SUMMARY:Belly Dance Cane Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on dancing with a cane\, also known as raqs al Assaya. This type of dance is considered a folkloric style and was derived from the men’s tahtib\, a martial arts dance that uses long canes. Don’t worry. We won’t be doing martial arts! Raqs al Assaya is flirty and its movements are more grounded. \nWe will work on combos with the cane\, twirling techniques\, and movements that are unique to this style. This workshop is open to all levels but some previous dance experience may be helpful. \nThere will be a 10 minute break during this workshop. There are water fountains available just outside the dance studio. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move around freely. This class will be taught barefoot but feel free to wear dance shoes or socks with grips. \nThe cost for the workshop is $40 which can be paid the day of with cash\, Venmo\, or Cash App.

This fall the Gardens extends a rare invitation to visit our Toshinan\, one of the most authentic Japanese teahouses outside of Japan. Step away from the hectic pace of modern life and inside the tea house to savor a bowl of tea with hosts Ritsuko Asano and Josh Haynes along with members of the Urasenke Association of Birmingham. In keeping with cultural tradition visitors are required to follow traditional Japanese practices when entering Toshinan (more information at registration). \n\nSince the tea ceremony will take place on the tatami floor\, we kindly request that you refrain from wearing jeans. Please wear pants or skirts that cover your knees. Kimonos are also welcome.\nShoes are not permitted in the tea house; please wear new\, white socks.\nTo ensure everyone can enjoy the aroma of matcha\, please refrain from wearing perfumes or cologne.\nPlease remove accessories such as watches\, rings\, bracelets\, and facial piercings to avoid scratching the tea sets.\nYou will sit on your knees or sit cross-legged for the ceremony so dress comfortably. Stools will be provided if needed.\n\nLocation: Japanese Garden \n\n\n \n \nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
