SUMMARY:Planting\, Transplanting\, and Re-potting Trees and Shrubs
DESCRIPTION:#image-595 + picture img {\n –focal-point: 50% 50%;\n } \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n | \n \n \n\n\n\n\nSpring may be the default season when it comes to planting or gardening\, but autumn is ideal for trees and shrubs. The combination of cooler temperatures and fall rain allows trees to establish their roots before the stress of summer. However\, improper planting is the number one cause of a shortened life for trees and shrubs. In this class Master Gardener David Doggett will share the latest research-based recommendations and best practices for how one should plant\, transplant\, or re-pot these staples of the home landscape. \nLocation:  Adventure Classroom \n\n\n \n \nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Thank you for your support! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\nbecome a member\n\n\n\nCancellation & Refund Policy\nRefunds (minus a $15 processing fee) will be given for Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens programs priced at $25 or more if notification is made at least 10 business days prior to class start date. (You are always welcome to send another person under your registration if you cannot attend.) Transfers may be made to programs of equal value at no additional fee. We reserve the right to cancel classes due to lack of participation or other unforeseen circumstances. Please note that programs are held rain or shine; in extreme weather conditions\, programs may be canceled for your safety and the safety of staff and volunteers. If we cancel a program for any of these reasons\, we will issue a full refund. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n Add to calendar \n\n\n\n \n Google Calendar \n \n\n \n iCalendar \n \n\n \n Outlook 365 \n \n\n \n Outlook Live

SUMMARY:Sense & Response - Nature Drawing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As the contemporary art world witnesses an exciting revival in drawing directly from nature\, come join the movement with local interdisciplinary artist Annie Kammerer Butrus as she leads a creativity workshop in this timeless practice. \nThe workshop will begin in the field with Butrus teaching her methods for shadow tracing and blind contour drawing. These exercises focus on the physicality of light as well as intentional studying. While the workshop will include technical guidance\, no technical ability or proficiency is required. The final goal? For each artist to leave with a greater confidence in their ability to visually capture their unique reactions to the natural world. \nEach workshop participant will be provided with a small wire-bound sketchbook\, pencil\, and a Sakura micron pen that they can keep for their own practice. \nAnnie Kammerer Butrus (b. Evanston\, Illinois) is an award-winning artist with an M.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Notre Dame and a B.A. from Wellesley College\, where she studied architecture\, landscape architecture and studio art. She exhibits her work in major cities\, galleries and academic institutions. Realized primarily through painting\, Butrus’ artistic practice focuses on the intersection of science\, landscape\, and memory. Her interest lies in how mapping shapes our idea of place and belonging\, how to document change and time\, and how often the source of our interaction with nature is from the inside looking out. Her process employs many series of latex resist and layers of opaque and translucent acrylic paint\, applied in succession to create lines and boundaries. Labor intensive\, the resist application records the act of painting\, allows complete control of the painted surface and then\, once removed\, transforms the painting over and over\, creating positive and negative voids.

SUMMARY:Dowsing Through Time: A Brief History
DESCRIPTION:I will start by defining what dowsing is and\, sometimes more importantly\, what it is not. \nThen\, we will compare dowsing to divination and ask whether they are the same. We will discuss the misconception: is it water witching or works of evil? \nI will share highlights of over 8\,000 years of dowsing history\, from its earliest beginnings in cave drawings to its more modern-day references in mining and the military. \nI will cover some books and publications in which dowsing has been described or alluded to since antiquity\, plus some thoughts on some contemporary ones. \nIn closing\, we will look at some present-day applications of dowsing that dowsers use to help them locate things.
