Driving Directions Below If Not Meeting the Georgia Group.
The 11th Annual Georgia Adventurers Trail Festival & Car Camping Trip
This will be perhaps the biggest starting weekend for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers beginning their long trip to Maine from Springer Mountain, Georgia.
We will camp off FS58, close to Three Forks, about 5-6 miles north from the shelters on Springer Mountain. There will be no backpacking, as we will be camping off the road. This is right beside the Appalachian Trail, and we’ll be offering ” Trail Magic ” to the hikers that walk by our camp site.
Would like everyone to unload vehicles….and park vehicles as far away from picnic area as possible. Place tents around the picnic area. There is a fire pit, so don’t put your tent close to where fire will be. Check wind direction, before tenting close to bathrooms…
We’ll have plenty of space. A covered picnic privilion, several picnic tables… a building with bathrooms, but use at your own risk! No Water, no showers. Our camp site is perhaps 1000 ft off the AT…. and still within a mile of Long Creek Falls.
Do NOT allow your dogs in the pavilion or around the campfire. Disruptive dogs will not be allow to bother people, you will be asked to remove your dog.
What’s ” Trail Magic ” ??? Think about camping…. all that you leave behind…. all the really good food at home…. candy….coffee… hot chocolate… fruit…soft drinks. Perhaps some will cook hot dogs, hamburgers, etc… Trail Magic is freely giving these hikers some goodies, that they can’t take on their long trip.
Trail Magic items :
Cokes, Sprites, Dr. Pepper, etc….
Coffee, hot chocolate, tea, etc…
Apples, oranges, bananas, etc….
Strawberries, grapes, raisins, etc..
Cheese, slices, sticks, etc………
Brownies, fudge, chocolate…
Candy bars, candy…
We can hike south a mile and check out Long Creek Falls. We can hike north and check out one of the AT shelters. Or I can sneak you off to a water falls or two….
This is a Dog Friendly event. Just be sure you clean up after your pet!
This is a NON-Drinking Group event!
This is probably best route from North or Eastern Atlanta Metro area.
Directions from Walmart in Dahlonega to Hickery Flatt Cemetery.
From Walmart in Dahlonega…. Go north (right) about 2 ¾ miles, Turn LEFT onto Hwy 60 (North Grove St.). There is a Camp Merrill sign directing you there.
Go over 2 miles, then at a few stores, Turn RIGHT onto Camp Wahsega Road.
Keep straight on Camp Wahsega Road for almost 8 ½ miles, Do NOT hit concrete barricades…. At the gate into Camp Merrill.
Turn RIGHT at entrance to Camp Merrill, this is Coopers Gap Road. Drive 2.8 miles, then
Turn a sharp LEFT, this is FS-42.
Stay straight on FS-42… there are a lot of roads that connect to FS-42. Go for 7.8 miles, then you will be at Winding Stair Gap. This is the intersection where most people get lost. There is a National Forest Sign board there.
Turn RIGHT, The road sign is just past Bulletin Board… FS 58 (Did NOT see this sign a few days ago)and go 1.9 miles
Take RIGHT Fork onto FS # 251, there is a nice new metal gate here now, just drive on through gate and go 2.1 miles, Take LEFT and you will see sign saying CEMETERY, go 1000ft, and you are there !
Driving Directions, Option B:
This is 10 miles longer driving distance, but perhaps better for those driving from the west side of Atlanta Metro.
Turn right when leaving Amicalola Falls State Park and follow Highway 52 for about 13.6 miles. When you see a power substation (transformer station, etc) on the left and Cartacay Church on the right, turn right onto Roy Road (it was signed when I was there last). Follow Roy Road for 9.7 miles. You will go thru one stop sign and will turn right on Doublehead Gap Road at the second stop sign. Follow this road approximately 2.2 miles until you see Mt. Pleasant Church on your left. Turn right on the dirt road directly across from the church (Forest Service Road 42 is unsigned).
You should see a large sign indicating that this is the entrance to the Blue Ridge Wildlife Management Area and another sign “Springer Mt. 6.5 miles”. Follow the dirt road 6.5 miles to a parking area on your left Continue about 2 miles and you will be at the Winding Stair Gap Intersection…. TURN LEFT, with the two wooden sign boards on your left. FS 58 (Did NOT see this sign a few days ago)and go 1.9 miles
Take RIGHT Fork onto FS # 251, There is a nice new metal gate here now, just drive on through gate. No Road sign there last time I was here. go 2.1 miles, Take LEFT and you will see sign saying CEMETERY, go 1000ft, You’re now at Hickory Flatt Cemetery.
I added this map just so you’ll understand why its so confusing at this intersection. Cell Service is spotty…. be sure to print directions and map.
Option C: would be coming from bottom of map on FS 77
Option B: Will be coming from the left, Springer Mtn on FS 42
Option A: Coming from the East on FS 42
This is the worst route and not recommended if driving a car.
This begins at the road entrance to Amicalola Park, at the old store.
Turn LEFT or EAST on Hwy 52 and go 6.8 miles ,Turn LEFT or North on Nimblewill Church Road and go 1.2 miles, Turn RIGHT or EAST at Nimblewill Church and go 1000ft, Turn LEFT or NORTH on FS #28-1 ( at Bull Mtn Sign ) go 2.1 miles, Take LEFT Fork onto FS # 77 and go 5.1 miles
At Winding Stair Gap Intersection… keep straight… you will see a Forest Service Bulletin Board ahead of you, that is the road you need to be on. The road sign is just past Bulletin Board… FS 58 (Did NOT see this sign a few days ago)and go 1.9 miles
Take RIGHT Fork onto FS # 251, go 2.1 miles, Take LEFT and you will see sign saying CEMETERY, go 1000ft, You’re now at Hickory Flatt Cemetery. There is a nice new metal gate here now, just drive on through gate. No Road side there last time I was here.
