Sipsey Wilderness Hike to Big Tree // 9.1 miles

October 16, 2021 @ 9:30 am - 3:30 pm

highres 499152285 DkLS1F.tmp Sipsey Wilderness Hike to Big Tree // 9.1 miles

This will be a hiking loop to go see Big Tree in the Sipsey Wilderness (Double Springs, Al.)

We will meet at Thompson Trailhead at 9:30am and start the hike at 10:00am.

Due to restrictions on group sizes in Bankhead for conservation purposes, this hike will be limited to 10 people.

This will be an ~9 mile difficult hike with ~1000′ of elevation gain and lots of downed trees.

We will start at Thompson trailhead, information on Google maps is below. To get to this trailhead, there’s a fair amount of gravel forest roads to navigate, but they are pretty well kept, just a little bumpy at times.

From Thompson trailhead, we will go on the shortcut unofficial path to the Sipsey 204a trail which leads up to Big Tree (largest tree in Alabama). East Bee Branch Falls is at the same location so will get to see it too.

We will then backtrack to the Sipsey 209 trail and follow it along the Sipsey river until we get to Needles Eye and explore it.

From there, we will continue onto the Sipsey 206 trail and back to Thompson trailhead.

If you’ve never been in the Sipsey before, be sure to bring your camera as it’s quite grand out there and lots of great photo opportunities.

There will be an optional late lunch/early dinner afterwards at Sapore Grill in Double Springs afterwards, they have some awesome Italian food.

Do note that there is no cell reception pretty much once you enter Bankhead Forest, and definitely not in the Sipsey.

The weather is always an unknown factor unfortunately. As a result, if we’re getting close to the meet up date and chance of rain is high, will likely cancel unless folks don’t mind hiking in the rain (ai hiked this same loop when Hurricane Ida rolled through, so I don’t mind much).
