Science on Screen
February 28, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
McWane Science Center has been selected as a 2019 “Science on Screen” partner.
Science on Screen creatively pairs screenings of classic, cult, and documentary films with lively introductions by notable figures from the world of science, technology, and medicine. Each film is used as a jumping off point for the speaker to reveal current scientific research or technological advances, providing the perfect combination of entertainment and enlightenment – even for the most science-phobic culture vulture!
Join us Feb. 28th, 2019 for ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance.
Based on the New York Times bestseller, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” (starring Oprah Winfrey) tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew. It’s a story inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we’re made of.
