October 27: organist Christopher Houlihan in recital

First guest recital in Samford’s Reid Chapel since major additions to the pipe organ

Program features works by J.S. Bach, Buxtehude, Schumann and more

“They call organist Christopher Houlihan the ‘Fred Astaire of the pipe organ’ … He plays it with the technical prowess of a rock star.” – Arizona Daily Star

On Sunday, October 27, 2019, at 2:30 pm “Organ phenom” (Cincinnati Enquirer) Christopher Houlihan returns to Birmingham to perform at Samford University on Reid Chapel’s 1962 Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ. The concert is at Reid Chapel (800 Lakeshore Dr., Birmingham, AL). Admission is free.

This concert marks Christopher Houlihan’s third performance at Samford University, with each previous program drawing acclaim from critics and audience alike. “If the chapel had rafters, they would have shaken. If any dust had settled in the pipes, it would have been cleared out. This rambling work requires vision to make it cohesive, and Houlihan had that in abundance,” raved AL.com. Since Houlihan’s last performance at Reid Chapel, new solo and percussion divisions were added to the organ by the Quimby Pipe Organ Co. This concert marks the first guest recital since these major additions were completed.

Houlihan’s organ recital includes favorites by Bach, Buxtehude, Schumann, Herbert Howells, as well as Louis Vierne’s Symphony No. 2. A renowned interpreter of Vierne’s organ music, Houlihan’s “Vierne 2012” tour attracted international attention and critical acclaim for his marathon performances of Vierne’s six organ symphonies in six major North American cities. The Los Angeles Times called his performance there “a major surprise of the summer, a true revelation.” Critics have applauded Christopher Houlihan for his “world class chops” and “marvelous ear”; The Los Angeles Times proclaimed him dazzling and seductive. Houlihan’s Disney Hall debut, performing with principal brass of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, resulted in The LA Times raving, “Houlihan is the next big organ talent.” Recent concert highlights include debuts at the Kennedy Center and Kimmel Center, and concertos with the Columbus (GA) Symphony and Chamber Orchestra of Boston. In 2017 Houlihan was appointed the John Rose College Organist-and-Directorship Distinguished Chair of Chapel Music at Trinity College in Hartford, his alma mater.
