Lectures on the Lawn with Jim Bremer
August 8, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
For this week’s post-Unity Market Lecture on the Lawn, we welcome Jim Bremer! Titled “Commentary on the Intersection of Anti-racism and Environmentalism,” Jim’s talk will be open to all who wish to engage in a flexible framework of thought experiments designed to provide material for discussion. His goal is to encourage new, even breakthrough, insights that will lead to actual, actionable changes in behavior for the participants. Jim gets us started with this quote from “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” by Yuval Noah Harari: “…the first religious effect of the Agricultural Revolution was to turn plants and animals from equal members of a spiritual roundtable into property.” To that list, Jim adds people, land, water, and minerals.
For 40 years, Jim was a cog in the capitalist wheels of the food and beverage industry, traversing the US from northern California to southern Louisiana. His organizational and gardening skills were honed in post-Katrina New Orleans, where he worked for justice and progress building collaborative networks and urban farming projects. Presently, he is finding purpose in Birmingham at Wild Violet Gardens in a simple relationship with a few acres of arable land that speak to him.
Our lecture series is free to attend. If you are able, we encourage you to contribute any amount to our speakers with a love offering. We will provide water, light snacks, chairs, and a few blankets. Please feel free to bring your own food and drink. Face coverings and 6+ foot distancing between households are required. We invite you to come a little early to shop Unity Market‘s amazing selection of food and farm vendors, here at Unity of Birmingham every Saturday from 4-7pm!
