Hike to Shangri-La Falls and Collier Creek Falls
January 28, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 pm

We will take a hike in the Bankhead Forest to Shangri-La Falls and Collier Creek Falls with a small group of people. This is a hike through the forest over rough terrain with no trails. When we are close to each falls we will have a scramble down a short cliff face. I will bring a rope if we need any assistance getting down and back up. We will see Shangri-La first then come out and go to Collier Creek Falls and scramble down the cliff to see it. At Collier Creek Falls you will need a pair of shoes to wear in the water so you do not get your hiking shoes wet. We will walk a a little ways upstream to see the falls and remains of the mill that used to be at this location. There are still a few of the rock towers that supported the flume that routed water to the water wheel that ran the saw mill. No dogs on this hike. This is not a dog friendly event since they cannot easily get down and up the steep areas. Roe and I will stop for dinner after the hike at Chef Troy’s in Houston and hope you can join us. Across the street from the restaurant is the Houston Log Jail that is the only surviving one in north AL and the second oldest in the nation.
**What** **you need to bring:** Wear some hunter orange if you have any, we are in a national forest. Shoes or sandals with straps (not flip flops since they are loose and can fall off and float downstream) to get wet on the walk to Collier Falls, you do not need to hike in wet shoes. Hiking poles are handy to have. Water and a snack or lunch. I will carry some small towels for us to dry our feet with after we get out of the water.
**I will send the meeting location information to each of the attendees.**
