FREEFORM, a dance performance LIVESTREAM benefiting The Dance Foundation

The Dance Foundation presents FREEFORM, a dance performance + a virtual silent auction

Featuring dance works by select classes in The Dance Foundation’s Dance Artist Program as well as dance works by Guest Artists Margi Cole, Therese Laeger and Rebecca Salzer. Program is approximately 45 minutes.

GUEST ARTIST Margi Cole, founder and Artistic Director of The Dance COLEctive, received a BA in dance from Columbia College Chicago and an MFA in dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught for several educational and professional organizations nationally and internationally and performed with many well-known choreographers and companies. In 2011, Cole participated in the Deborah Hay Solo Commissioning Project. Margi has received two Illinois Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships, a 2005 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Award, three Individual Artist Program Creative Project Grants from Chicago’s DCASE, an American Marshall Memorial Fellowship and, most recently, a 2018 Art Omi Dance Residency. Active in the Chicago dance community, she has served as a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Consortium Member, on grant panels, in public forums and is on the board of See Chicago Dance. Cole was on faculty at Columbia College Chicago, where she has served as a Lecturer and Associate Chair and as the Program Manager of the Dance Center Presenting Series. Currently she is a faculty member in the Dance Department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts.

GUEST ARTIST Therese Laeger is a graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts and Birmingham-Southern College with a B.A. in Dance Arts Management.  Therese began her professional career as a dancer with Birmingham Ballet, and then Cleveland Ballet.  Returning to Birmingham, she joined the The Alabama Ballet/Ballet South performing soloist and principal roles.  Following her performance career, she held leadership positions with Alabama Ballet, Alabama School of Fine Arts Dance Department, AROVA Contemporary Ballet, and Edgewood Dance.  Collaborating with filmmaker Colleen Laeger, she produced the award-winning film AROVA. Following her passion for teaching, Therese completed pedagogical studies with The Paris Opera Ballet School (Bessy, Golovine, NYU), The Vaganova Syllabus (White), The Royal Academy of Dance (London), The Revolutionary Principles of Movement (Chapman) and teacher training at The Pilates Center (Boulder, CO).  Most recently, she received an Artist Fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts (2019) to develop seminars focusing on the ART of Teaching Ballet.  Therese travels as an independent teaching artist, staging classical and neo-classical repertoire. Currently she is on faculty with University of Montevallo, Samford University and since 2015 as a Teaching Artist for The Dance Foundation.

GUEST ARTIST Rebecca Salzer, Associate Professor of Dance and Director of the Collaborative Arts Research Initiative at The University of Alabama, is an intermedia dance artist and educator. Her work for the stage has been seen in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, where she directed Rebecca Salzer Dance Theater for a decade. Her award-winning films and videos have been programmed in national and international venues and on public affiliate television stations KQED, KPBS, and WTTW. Salzer is a Jacob K. Javits Fellow. She holds a B.A. in Humanities from Yale University and an M.F.A. in Dance Theatre from the University of California, San Diego. Ms. Salzer also serves as Project Director for the Dancing Digital Project, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities(dancingdigital.org).
