REGISTRATION IS FULL
Stay tuned for future events presented in partnership with
Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve.

Join Alabama Audubon and Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve for a special opportunity to see birds up close as our scientists document Ruffner’s summer bird community through bird banding—the capture, measurement, and release of wild birds.

Our organizations have partnered to participate in the Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) program, a continent-wide conservation effort to monitor bird survival and reproductive success. The outing will be led by Alabama Audubon’s executive director, Dr. Scot Duncan. We will meet at the Eastern Trailhead and walk the 0.9-mile trail to the banding station. Bring binoculars if you have them – but we’ll have extras to loan out for the event.

Meeting Place: Meet at the Ruffner Mountain Eastern Trailhead on Ruffner Road. This is the trailhead across from the car junk yard. This is NOT the Nature Center on the north side of the mountain, and NOT the trailhead next to the Irondale ballfields. The address on Google Maps is 2002-1942 Ruffner Rd, Birmingham, AL 35210. GPS coordinates are 33.55870, -86.68890. You may stay with us as long as you would like. Prepare appropriately for the day’s weather and the possibility of mosquitos.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Through more than seventy-five years of conservation work in one of our nation’s most ecologically rich states, Alabama Audubon has seen firsthand how diversity strengthens natural communities. This same principle applies to human communities, which is why our organization is committed to providing equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Alabamians to learn about and enjoy wild birds, their habitats, and the natural world. One of the best ways to support that belief is by valuing and actively seeking to strengthen diversity among our staff, our board, and our membership. To that end, Alabama Audubon welcomes everyone to participate in our work, and strives to make our programs, classes, and events welcome, inclusive, and accessible to all.
