Back-to-school Family Reunion Block Party via YWCA Central AL

BIRMINGHAM, AL — (July 26, 2021) — Just in time to commemorate its 10th anniversary as a staple in Birmingham’s historic Woodlawn community, YWCA Central Alabama’s Family Resource Center will host a back-to-school Family Reunion Block Party. The big community event will be at 1 55th Place South in Woodlawn on July 31 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (in the space that usually hosts Woodlawn Street Market).

Parking for pre-registered guests will be at Christ Health Center at 5720 1st Avenue South and YWCA Family Resource Center at 100 59th Street South. Shuttle services will be provided from Christ Health by Entrepreneur Cassandra “Joy” King’s Bham Eat. Drink. Ride. Food Tour.

Family Reunion Block Party guests will enjoy free meals from Travis’s Chicago Style Food Truck or Eugene’s Hot ChickenLillie’s CupCoca-Cola Bottling United, Bryce and Bray’s Bakery, Frito Lay, and more. Community resources will be available with information on programs and services at the Family Resource Center, YWCA community housing,  YWCA Child Development Center, My Sister’s Closet resale boutique, YWCA domestic violence services, Christ Health Center, and others.

Families will receive backpacks loaded with school supplies and opportunities to win door prizes such as gift cards, hygiene gift baskets, technology gadgets, and back-to-school items. The Family Reunion Block Party soundtrack will be provided by 98.7 KISS-FM and 95.7 JAMZ radio stations.

More than 400 attendees registered for this at-capacity event designed to equip families with resources and supplies to start the school year off successfully. Masks and social distancing are an expectation. Guests are signed up to attend during designated one-hour slots only to control crowd flow and maximize fun.

“The FRC team has worked for months to plan an event that is not only free and festive but safe and enjoyable for all. We want the first FRC gathering of this magnitude to be one that families from all around get to experience,” said Angela Abdur-Rasheed, Senior Director of Economic Empowerment.
