AT Adventure: Yellow Creek Gap to NOC

June 25, 2022 @ 9:00 am - June 26, 2022 @ 3:00 pm

1024x576 ffZWXk.tmp AT Adventure: Yellow Creek Gap to NOC

Come with me as I explore the AT in North Carolina.
(Cross posted on Georgia Adventure Group)

Intermediate backpacking trip; a little over 11 miles a day and ending at the NOC. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of visiting this gem, just know there is great food and ice cold beer at the end. What more could you ask for? 🙂 Lets have some fun out here in the woods!

Saturday (14 miles)
Meet at the NOC at 9am EST at the basecamp parking lot (there is no fee). Divide into cars (or car) and shuttle ourselves the 28 minutes to Yellow Creek Gap. From Yellow Creek Gap, hike SOBO up about 1,000 ft elevation and then ridge hike some small (slightly treacherous but we will make it fun) hills. Stop for lunch at Brown Fork Gap Shelter where there is piped water and a privy. End the afternoon with a calf burning climb up Cheoah Bald. I dont run up mountains but you are welcome to. Bring hard candy to suck on or a crisp apple while walking up to energize those legs. We will end the night at Sassafras Gap Shelter. This is a large shelter (space for 14 people) with a spring and privy. It has room for tents and hammocks (although this seems debatable if you want a flat spot).

Sunday (9 miles)
Wake up and shake out our legs. Lets plan to leave around 8am. We will start with a small incline to warm up our legs and then its about 2,500 feet downhill to the NOC! How are your knees? 😉

1. This is an intermediate backpack for people looking to improve or get experience with long-distance backpacking. That being said, prepare to hike 2.0ish mph uphill and 3.0 miles downhill or you can hike your own hike and meet us at the shelter.
2. You MUST bear hang or cannister anything that goes in or on your body. It doesn’t sound like there are bear cables at the shelter.
3. You should have the ten essentials for backpacking (headlamp, map, water filter, etc)
4. **I hike with the best trail dog south of the North Pole. This will be a dog friendly hike and pups are encouraged.**
5. We will practice Pack in, Pack out. Lets keep the trail beautiful and trash free.
