AT Adventure: Burningtown Gap to NOC

April 23, 2022 @ 10:00 am - April 24, 2022 @ 12:00 pm

1024x576 7BiOuZ.tmp AT Adventure: Burningtown Gap to NOC

Come with me as I explore the AT in North Carolina.
(Cross posted on Georgia Adventures)

Some of you have been reaching out about a lighter backpacking trip to get those mountain legs so here is something a little shorter. The best part is that its mostly downhill to the NOC 🙂

Saturday (7 miles)
Meet at the NOC at 10am EST at the basecamp parking lot. Divide into cars (or car) and shuttle ourselves the 34 minutes to Burningtown Gap. From Burningtown Gap, hike NOBO past Cold Spring Shelter and up Copper Ridge Bald about 1000 ft elevation and then down 1500 ft to Tellico Gap. Then its up another 1000 ft to Wesser Bald Tower.

The Wesser Bald Fire Tower was erected in the mid 1900s and there are (only) two flights of steps. At the top is a 360 degree panorama view of:
North: Nantahala River Valley, Fontana Lake and the Cheoah Mountains with the Smokies crowning the horizon
East: Little Tennessee River Valley
South: Copper Ridge Bald and Wayah Bald
West: Nantahala Lake and the route of the Bartram Trail

We will stay at Wesser Bald Shelter that night. There are bear cables.

Sunday (6 miles)
Wake up and shake out our legs then its all downhill as we head past Rugus Shelter and down to our final destination at the NOC.

1. This is a beginners backpack for people looking to improve or get experience with backpacking. That being said, prepare to hike 2.2 mph uphill and 2.5+ miles downhill or you can hike your own hike as long as you meet us at the NOC at the end.
2. You MUST bear hang anything that goes in or on your body. There are cables at the shelter but you probably wont be able to hang your entire bag. Bring something additional that the mice wont get thru 😉
3. You should have the ten essentials for backpacking (headlamp, map, water filter, etc)
4. I hike with the best trail dog south of the North Pole. This will be a dog friendly hike and pups are encouraged.
