Artist Talk: Tia-Simone Gardner

June 27, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm

oin artists Tia-Simone Gardner and Coleman Center for the Arts for an artists talk on their recent work and research in the region.

Birmingham-born, Minneapolis-based artist Gardner is researching four houses in Alabama and Mississippi (Meridian/Philadelphia) that were inhabited by her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Gardner will make a public presentation and multiple trips to York, Birmingham, and East Mississippi. Gardner’s work will culminate as an artist book of essays and images. This is part of the artist’s ongoing study of race, geography history, space, and place.

Other recent projects include “Sweet Water Salt Water,” a floating camera obscura temporarily installed in the Buffalo Bayou and a 208-square-foot live-work structure. In the latter, Gardner explored the relationship between large cities and small housing spaces, specifically under- and un-utilized spaces as affordable or temporary housing projects.

Gardner states of housing, “As a space and a place that takes on all of the living that occurs in proximity to it, not just the physicality of its interiors and exteriors, the house must be thought of as in relation to design and political economy, particularly in relationship to the history of housing in the U.S.”

Gardner’s artist talk will be in our downtown space, Pop Start at 211B Broad Street (Highway 17), York across from the Super Dollar.

This event is #FREE. Light refreshments will be served.
