Alabama Audubon’s Gosse Nature Walk: Pelham

October 15, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Read Time 2 Minutes

Pre-registration is requested for planning purposes by 12 p.m. CDT on Thursday, October 14th. Visit https://alaudubon.org/event/2021-10-15/ for more information and to register.

Our Gosse Nature Walk series is back! We love these short nature breaks and think you will too. This one will be at the Treetop Nature Trail at Oak Mountain State Park. The elevated boardwalk is approximately 600 feet long and fifteen feet above ground level. There are six elevated raptor cages spread out along the boardwalk as well as benches for those who want to sit and enjoy the surroundings. The boardwalk winds through a beautiful wooded valley, so it’s a treat to be there. Join us as we take a treetop stroll along the elevated boardwalk with special guest Anne Miller, founder of the Alabama Wildlife Center and the one responsible for getting this trail built back in 1985. All abilities welcome!

The details: Meet at the pavilion parking lot on the right on John Findlay Dr. just before the entrance to Oak Mountain State park (33.317698, -86.781516). Together, we will caravan to the Treetop Nature Trail (those who feel comfortable can carpool from here). Treetop Nature Trail is on the left side of Terrace Drive, and is well marked. General parking is directly across the street from the trail. Accessible parking is available. Please note, although our Gosse Nature Walks are free, there is a fee to get into Oak Mountain State Park, so be sure to bring cash—adults are $5 each and seniors are $2 each.

Feel free to bring your binoculars, water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire.

In the case of inclement weather, the event may be cancelled. You may contact the trip leader the morning of the event if the weather is questionable.

Registration: To register, visit https://alaudubon.org/event/2021-10-15/.

Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible. Treetop Nature Trail has an accessible parking area at the level of the main walkway. Continue past the parking on the right and look for the handicap parking sign on the left immediately after the sign for the “Treetop Nature Trail.” The boardwalk is completely level with gradual rises that meet ADA standards. The parking lot on the right requires stairs to get to the boardwalk. Please email us if you will need accessible parking as there are four or five spaces, but we could probably park others behind each other if necessary.

Trip leaders: Alabama Audubon Outreach & Communications Director Sarah Randolph co-leads this trip with Anne Miller.
