It all started in New York City.  When healthcare professionals ended their shifts, residents throughout the Big Apple would start applauding and making noise to show their deep appreciation of their work in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic.

Last night, in downtown Birmingham at UAB Hospital, a new tradition was launched. A 67-foot high digital ‘thank you’ show was projected onto the wall of the Quarterback Tower at the corner of 19th street and 6th Avenue.

The display was shown between 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on the evening of August 26.

Here are videos of the show:

According to a UAB news release, the light show was made possible by a company called Diversified, a national digital technology provider

“We have personally seen the emotional toll COVID-19 has taken on these caregivers who must stare the worst of it in the face daily. They all deserve acknowledgment for being true heroes in this time of crisis. We thought what better way to relay that message than transforming a portion of a 105-foot building into a video screen ‘thank you’ tribute.” ~  David DeGruy, an account executive with Diversified.

Hospitalizations Finally Declining

The light show comes after UAB and local hospitals experienced record numbers of COVID-19 hospitalizations over the past two months. In the past month, since masks were mandated by the state and local retail establishments the number of  in-patient stays at UAB has declined.

Stay Tuned

Let’s hope UAB and Diversified team up again with another light show soon. The next show can celebrate their efforts conquering this dreaded virus.

Meanwhile, THANK YOU for recognizing the heroes among us.
