Who knew that it would take a global pandemic in order for drive-in entertainment to have the comeback it deserves? Now that we’re finding safe ways to have a little fun beyond our four walls, local companies are getting creative. Check out these 3 upcoming drive-in concerts in Birmingham as well as where you can catch a drive-in movie.

1. The Black Jacket Symphony Presents Concerts from the Car

  • When: June 4, 11, 18 and 25
  • Where: Hoover Met Complex

The Black Jacket Symphony proves that the show must go on. Every Thursday in June, they’ll be performing a different classic rock album. Their performances include:

  • June 4 – The Beatles “Abbey Road”
  • June 11 – Queen’s “A Night at the Opera ft. Marc Martel
  • June 18 – Journey’s “Escape”
  • June 25– Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “Damn the Torpedoes”

Going to a Black Jacket Symphony concert is like reliving the first time you listened to your classic rock album all the way through. They combine musical precision with a just as impressive visual experience unlike any other.

The drive-in concerts will be held in the Hoover Met Complex parking lot so you can watch from the comfort and safety of your own car. The parking is designed based on car type to ensure large trucks don’t obstruct the views of small sedans.

2. Alan Jackson “Small Town Drive-In”

  • Where: York Farms in Cullman, AL

Alan Jackson is gearing up for his first-ever drive-in concert. He’ll be bringing almost three decades of hits to this unique experience.

Upon arrival, attendants will assign you to a space to park. Fans will be allowed to sit outside of their cars to enjoy the show while practicing social distancing. You can even set up your cooler, tune into the show on the designated radio station and jam from the back of your hatchback. It sounds like the ideal summer night to me!

3. Birmingham Arts Drive-In

  • When: *UPDATE* Postponed until further notice due to the city’s curfew.
  • Where: UAB campus + online

Wait until you hear the line-up behind the Birmingham Arts Drive-In! The Alabama Ballet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Alys Stephens Center, Red Mountain Theatre Company and Opera Birmingham are teaming up to bring Birmingham an evening celebrating the arts.

Unfortunately, the event is sold out BUT you can still experience the best of Birmingham’s performing arts being streamed live via Youtube. The link will be shared on the day of the event by Alys Stephens Center.

Bonus: WBRC’s Jeh Jeh Pruitt will be the emcee and bring his contagious positivity with him.
