Tune in to Coffee & Collisions online on May 8 to hear from Dr. Michael Saag, the Associate Dean of Global Health at UAB, Director of the Center for AIDS Research at UAB’s School of Medicine and a renowned Infectious Disease physician and researcher. For nearly 40 years, Dr. Saag has been a key medical figure in the battle against HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Saag has recently been in the news due to another virus—COVID-19. Dr. Saag recently published an Op-Ed in the Washington Post, hosted a Q+A on C-Span with Dr. Anthony Fauci, and went on CBS Sunday Morning with his son, Dr. Harry Saag. At the same time, UAB Medical is at the forefront of clinical trials to find new drugs to combat COVID-19. Learn more.

Although he knows all about the science behind the virus, he now has a new point of view—Dr. Saag recently contracted COVID-19 and experienced all the symptoms.

Dr. Saag’s Experience

In addition to his substantial knowledge about infectious diseases, Dr. Saag has a personal experience with COVID-19. On March 12, Dr. Saag and his son Harry both contracted the disease. Initially, his symptoms were fairly mild—fatigue, cough, headache, fuzzy thinking and loss of his sense of smell.

Then, on day 6, his symptoms got worse. Each afternoon he experienced chills, fever, muscle aches, loss of appetite, inability to concentrate and numbness all over his body. After two weeks of battling the virus, he finally won—no more symptoms!
