Know how people say they’re “treasure hunting” when it comes to scouring garage sales, antique shops or thrift stores for gems? The Bargain Carousel’s events on Feb. 27, Apr. 4 and Apr.25 are the opposite of that. It’d be hard not to find amazing items. Grab your tickets and find out how you can be a part of the fun while putting your money right back into Birmingham.

It goes beyond shopping. It’s about the connection.

If you’ve ever heard the term “invest your influence,” you know one way to do so is with your dollars. Shopping at the Bargain Carousel is a small way to support a huge cause. But it doesn’t stop there—it connects you face to face with members of our community. Take it from the chair of the committee.

“I remember one young pregnant woman shopping in our infant department. I had just had my first child so she asked what products I had used and liked.

Together, we picked her out a bouncer, high chair and more gently used baby essentials. At the very end, her mother-in-law said she would buy all of it for her. The young mom was overwhelmed to tears by the gesture and I was sold on the Bargain Carousel!”

Jessica Thomas, Chair of the Bargain Carousel committee for the Junior Leauge of Birmingham

Shopping makes you realize how much we all have in common with our neighbors. Everyone needs clothes and sheets and school supplies—the affordable prices and many programs supported by the purchases ensure everyone has access to nice things.

This is NOT your average garage sale.

Have you ever heard of a three-part garage sale? You can choose the event that’s best for you, or go to all three! Let me break it down for you:

Bargain Bash–Feb.27

The Bargain Bash is like if you built the ultimate shopping experience out of your dreams. Not only are you supporting a great cause with each purchase (hello, guilt-free shopping), but there’ll be food, music, drinks, auctions…and the list keeps going.

This event sale includes sweet new merchandise from the Junior League of Birmingham (JLB)’s retail donors and a few donated heirloom items. There will also be a Diamond Drop—yes diamond—courtesy of Avani Rupa Fine Jewelers, along with over 100 auction items.

It’s a lot like attending a VIP trunk show. You’ll be able to shop for clothes, art and more from several guest retailers. Drinks and appetizers top it off so you can snack while you shop (you’ll need the energy). Oh, to make it the coolest event ever, The Bham DJ will be there to turn it into a true party.

  • When: Thurs., Feb. 27, 6- 11PM
  • Where: Junior League Building, 2212 20th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35223
  • Tickets: $40

Bargain Carousel Community Pop-Up Shop — April 4

JLB partners with the YWCA of Central Alabama to provide gently-used items to the Birmingham community, including many of life’s necessities, at affordable prices.  The money raised circulates back into the community because it goes toward funding JLB’s support services.

Items include furniture, large appliances, adult clothing, children’s clothing, baby items, electronics, home décor, kitchenware, toys and games, collectibles items, sports equipment and linens.

“We are bringing some of the community’s most needed items right to the heart of the need.

From financial education to the Junior League’s Diaper Bank, this sale will include access to some of the Junior League and the YWCA’s most critical services all in one place”

Jessica Thomas, Chair of the Bargain Carousel committee

Think of this as kind of a combination of the two events. Bargain Carousel provides the local community with the opportunity to purchase gently used merchandise, including many of life’s necessities, at very affordable prices.

You can shop with the added benefit of knowing that the money raised is returned directly to the Birmingham community to fund the 39 Community Projects the JLB supports.

  • When: April 25, 8AM-5PM
  • Where: Junior League of Birmingham Building, 2212 20th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35223

Where do the Bargain Carousel items come from?

Bargain Carousel
JLB volunteers provide over 7,000 hours of service and over 100,000 items through member donations. Photo courtesy of the Junior League of Birmingham.

Good question. The high-quality items are donated by over 2,300 members of the JLB. The organization also receives new merchandise from several retail partners in the area including:

  • At Home Furnishings
  • Three Sheets
  • Lili Pad & GiGi’s Teen
  • Homewood Sporting Goods
  • Alabama Outdoors

The JLB will continue to collect donations over the coming months, just email bargaincarousel@jlbonline.com. Every sale is a little different, but the prices stay low and the quality stays supreme. Check it out for yourself.

That was a lot of info—here’s a quick summary of all three events.

  • Bargain Bash: An exclusive party featuring retail vendors, food, music and auctions. It takes place on Feb. 27 at the JLB building. Tickets are $40.
  • Community Pop-Up Shop: JLB will sell gently-used necessities at affordable prices. No tickets required. The sale takes place at YWCA of Central Alabama on Apr. 4.
  • Bargain Carousel: The LARGEST garage sale in Birmingham. Shop from new and gently-used merchandise donated by over 1,000 community members. It takes place on Apr. 25 at the JLB building. Tickets are $10.

Don’t forget to purchase tickets. Keep up to date with the Junior League of Birmingham through Facebook and its website.
