Listen to some storytelling

Interested in the art and entertainment that the neighborhood has to offer?  Taste of Five Points has that as well. Singer/songwriters will be performing their tunes as part of Taste of Five Points’ storytelling competition, and it’s up to the audience to choose the winner–the “Five Points Star”. There are seven finalists in the running to receive $500. Get a preview of the artists here

Writing groups from the Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop and Real Life Poets will also be on stage. We are so happy to see the return of these talented writers from Ada Long and Real Life Poets to coincide with Singer/Songwriters for the Five Point Star, adding to the artistry offered in Five Points South in the Heart of Birmingham,” said Joe Babin, Five Points Alliance secretary and owner/operator of Orbit Salon.

Support a worthy cause

Proceeds from the event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters, a non-profit that is making a positive impact on Birmingham youth. John Boone, Orchestra Partners principal, shared his experience as a volunteer:

“I started volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters in early 2017, when I moved back to Five Points South. I’d heard that their greatest need was male mentors, and that the time commitment was minimal for the impact that I could have. When I interviewed, they asked what type of Little Brother I’d like to be paired with. I told them ‘Whoever needs me the most,’ and immediately the staff knew I should mentor a guy named Ja’Onnie.

He had been on the list for months, and his best friend kept calling the staff and asking if he had a Big yet. Since then, Ja’Onnie and I have gone on countless adventures in the Birmingham area. We’ve scouted new swimming holes, I drove him around Talladega on race weekend, we saw the 2017 National Championship victory parade in Tuscaloosa, and we sometimes end our day with a feisty game of basketball at Park Place downtown or the Highland/Chez parking lot behind my apartment.

What I’ve learned most from BBBS is how big of an impact one person can have on another. I’m a better person for having known him, and I know I’ve helped him grow through a volatile time, a time when young men are regularly tempted and confronted with realities I never faced growing up. Most importantly, I know that our impact on each other radiates to other people in unseen ways, and for anyone reading this (especially men), I want you to know that I value my time more than anything else and I’m pleased to have invested some of it with my Little Brother.”
