Symphony No. 9 “Ode to Joy”

Both evenings begin at 7PM at the Alys Stephens Center’s Jemison Concert Hall. Ticket discounts are always available for students, teachers, patrons 40 and under, and veterans/active military.

You’ll recognize this Symphony from being  featured in a number of popular films, including Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, The Beatles’ Help! and Bruce Willis’ Die Hard. 

Symphony No. 9 includes a robust choir made up of the ASO Chorus and the Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church Choir, in addition to Soprano Diana Newman, Mezzo-soprano Chaudia Chapa, Tenor Roderick George and Bass Andrew Gangestad.

Be sure to get to the Alys Stephens Center early for Concert Comments, a pre-performance talk providing insight into the evening’s music. Concert Comments are held each night at 6:15pm in the Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall.

“Ode to Joy” also spotlights two composers closely tied to Beethoven–Brahms’s “Haydn Variations.”

Do you enjoy hearing the symphony amongst nature? Symphony in the Summer at Railroad Park is your ticket and it kicks off in June! 

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra is returning to the Parkside neighborhood for their annual Symphony in the Summer series June 7-9. As always, the Summer series is FREE and features a variety of music from the usual classical sounds of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to Disney.

Symphony in the Summer is a great way to relax after a long summer day. Starting at 8PM on Friday and Saturday, and 6PM on Sunday, it’s the perfect time to grab a blanket and hear the symphony under the summer twilight. 

The Symphony in the Summer series includes:

  • June 7: Mozart Under the Stars! with a trio of delightful pieces from Rossini, Mozart and Schumann.
  • June 8: An evening of Symphonic Celebration featuring selections from Rossini, Mascagni, Bizet, Puccini, Tchaikovsky, Ponchielli, and Offenbach.
  • June 9: Family Fun Day featuring an evening full of energy with everything from Ghostbusters to Disney Magic to America the Beautiful.
