There are two types of people in this world: those who love thrill-of-the-hunt bargain shopping and those who would rather poke their own eye out than dig for a sale. Belonging squarely in the deal-loving, thrifty-to-the-core category, I decided to take a deep dive into the freshly stocked bins at Crazy Cazboy’s. Here’s what I found at the new discount store opening May 10.

Cassimus said he designed the bins to make it easier for shoppers to dig around. Instead of having deep bins that require shoppers to bend all the way down, Cassimus made these shallow trough bins for easy rummaging. (Photo by Christine Hull for Bham Now)

Crazy Cazboy’s Brought to You By… Crazy Cazboy Himself

As we reported last week, local serial entrepreneur John Cassimus will open the discount liquidation store in Birmingham’s Homewood area. It will be his third liquidation store venture since leaving the restaurant business. (Yep, Crazy Cazboy is the same Birmingham entrepreneur that brought us Zoe’s KitchenMaki FreshMiss Dots and Jinsei Sushi!)

Legit Deals For True Bargain Hunters

Cassimus says this model of discount store is the first of its kind in Alabama. Each Thursday, the Crazy Cazboy’s staff will stock bins with merchandise liquidated from big retailers such as Target, Amazon, Home Depot and Best Buy. (So. Much. Target. Stuff.)

Beginning Friday morning, each item is sold on a descending price structure ($6 on Friday down to to 25 cents by Wednesday). They’ll close again the next Thursday for restocking and also stock the bins throughout the week.

What To Expect May 10

You’ll find anything from baby wipes to refurbished iPads, Garmin watches to the perfect greeting card for your grandma mixed throughout the bins.

The best part? These aren’t your average liquidated products that were either returned or damaged. Cassimus says that ninety percent of the items are actually brand new merchandise in perfect condition.

“When I do business, when I’m in a segment of an industry, I always try to position myself at the top. That means with every aspect—quality of product, quality of service… you name it. I want to create a niche at the highest level.”

The new concept is getting some major attention from locals. The Crazy Cazboy’s Facebook page has only been up a few weeks and, as of Tuesday, already had over 12k likes. The deals are going viral already!

My Shopping Experience in the Sea of Bins

Once given permission to dig in, I was immediately amazed at the sheer RANDOMNESS of the contents within the first bin. It actually made me laugh out loud. My first handful from deep within the product pile contained a zebra print neck lanyard, a big bag of chia seeds and a cute purple authentic Otterbox cell phone case. Hard pass on the zebra lanyard and a huge yes to the phone case. You can’t beat that $6 price point!

The next bin I found myself some real prizes. #treatyoself, amirite? I’ve been searching for a mini projector for a while and found one deep within the depths of a bin. A quick search yields the same projector on Amazon for $89. I’ll take this one for $6, please and thank you.

This place is everything you never knew you always needed.

(For the sake of fairness, I did not actually purchase any of the items I selected. Everything mentioned in this article will still still be up for sale at the grand opening.)

California Concept is Rockin’

He said there are similar concepts popping up around the country that have seen great success. One of those stores is Falling Prices in Sacramento, California.

I did a little research on Falling Prices. Cassimus was not exaggerating. According to the Sacramento Bee, over 800 people were in line when the doors first opened at the Falling Prices store in Sacramento.

Cassimus is expecting the same scenario to play out at the Crazy Cazboy’s grand opening.

“We expect this concept to take the city of Birmingham by storm. Lines of customers will be waiting hours before the store opens and will be allowed to enter until the building occupancy is met. Then two in and two out,” he said.

Other things to consider when shopping at the discount store:

  • Customers are not permitted to wear large jackets
  • No purses or bags allowed
  • Cash and credit cards only
