Birmingham City Schools see big improvements in newly released 2017-2018 school report cards

It’s not just students who get report cards. Schools get them, too. Find out which Greater Birmingham schools made the A/B honor roll—and why we’re giving Birmingham City Schools a high five.

Most Improved

When Birmingham City Schools received its first A-F Report Card from the Alabama State Department of Education last year, there was a lot of room for improvement. This year, things are looking up. Dr. Lisa Herring, superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, summarized the progress in a video posted to Facebook on Friday.

By the Numbers

• 22 Birmingham City Schools received the grade F in academic year 2016-2017.
• 17 of those 22 schools, that’s more than 75 percent, improved by one letter grade or more in 2017-2018.
• 3 of the 17 improved schools leapt all the way to a grade C in 2017-2018.

One of the schools that moved from an F to a C was Oxmoor Valley Elementary. Melvin Love, principal, made a video to celebrate.

Force for Greatness, a 5-Year Plan
