Poké (pronounced “poe-kay”) is gaining popularity in Birmingham. The Hawaiian dish is sometimes served as an appetizer, but is also served as a main course. Find out more about poké and learn where you can get it in Birmingham

The dish is made up of a base (usually rice), topped with sushi-grade fish (usually raw), and an assortment of sauces and add-ons. It’s helpful to think of it as a sushi roll in a bowl. It is a healthy and delicious option for lunch, dinner or a snack! 

Ono Poké

Ono Poké is owned by Vinh Tran, and he was the first to bring poké to Birmingham. Ono Poké has two locations: one at the Pizitz Food Hall and one in Edgewood next to Dreamcakes. The new location in Edgewood just recently opened on October 5th. Both locations have two sections on the menu: pre-made bowl creations or “create-your-own.” They offer five different proteins:

  • Ahi tuna
  • Spicy tuna
  • Salmon
  • Shrimp (cooked)
  • Marinated tofu

Pizitz location: 1821 2nd Avenue North, Birmingham 

Edgewood location: 934 Oxmoor Road, Homewood

Momotaro Café

Momotaro Café is new to Birmingham. Located in Five Points, the café opened on October 10. This is the country’s 3rd location. The restaurant is an Asian café and the menu features sweet and savory Japanese crepes as well as boba tea, rolled ice cream and poké bowls. Their make-your-own poké bowl ingredient list has a large array of options, including thirteen different protein options! See the menu below:

Kale Me Crazy

Kale Me Crazy is a national chain for healthy fast-casual eats. The restaurant’s first location in Birmingham is in Homewood’s Soho Square area. While Kale Me Crazy is more likely to be known for their smoothies and juices, they do have one poké bowl on their menu. The bowl is not a make-your-own option. It is premade. Here is how it’s described on their menu: “Wild caught tuna dressed in our house marinade, avocado, cucumber, carrots, edamame, radish, toasted sesame seeds, spicy vegan mayonnaise, and furikake served on a bed of jasmine rice.”
