A New Heartbeat In Birmingham’s Five Points South

It’s been a year since Starbucks unexpectedly closed in Five Points South. Now, there is a new heartbeat headed to the area where we can get our coffee fix. That’s the hope of Filter owners, James Little and Jill Marlar at least.

“We want Filter to become the heartbeat of Five Points South—a place where locals and visitors can relax and connect,” Little said. “According to the recent Five Points Alliance survey, residents and visitors agreed that one of the most needed amenities in the district was a local coffee shop. We know our space and offerings will fulfill that need.”

Little, who currently works for REV Birmingham and serves on the Board of the Five Points Alliance, has always had one dream in life that he hoped to achieve—to open his very own coffee shop.

With the support of his wife and daughter, the couple decided to return to the roots in Five Points South to make his dream a reality for their family, and to contribute to the districts surging revitalization.

Experience Measured In Coffee Beans

It takes a lot of knowledge and know-how to open and run a business. This being said, you may be wondering if Little has any knowledge or experience in business management or coffee. Well, be amazed, because he actually has a great deal of it. In fact, you may even say he can measure his experience in coffee beans!

Little previously served as manager of Barnies Coffee at the Riverchase Galleria for five years and O’Henry’s Coffee for three years. He also managed the original Five Points South Starbucks location for six years. That’s a whole lot of coffee know-how if you ask me!

What will Filter bring to Birmingham’s Five Points South? Premium coffee from roasters across the state and a diverse menu of food options. But there’s more. The couple also has plans to use the space for community gatherings and events.

“We want to have storytelling on the weekends, provide a venue for local musicians and feature those in the community in a variety of ways with their talents,” Marlar said.

Sounds promising!

Opening Day

While there is currently no set opening date, the owners are hoping for an early December debut. That would definitely make a nice addition during the holidays!
