Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has been listed as one of the most influential African Americans by The Root 100.

Every year, The Root publishes a list of 100 influential African Americans between the ages of 25-45. They explain, “This year’s list of honorees is a reminder of the beauty and brilliance of blackness, at a time when the political and cultural landscape has grown even more hostile to the idea of black achievement.”

On the 2018 Root 100 Woodfin was listed as number 32. Here is how they described the city’s 37-year old mayor: Woodfin is Birmingham’s youngest mayor in nearly 125 years, giving him a unique perspective on issues for the millennial generation. Woodfin is a shining example of the new progressivism sweeping the South.”

The 100 people listed all come from various fields such as STEM, politics, media, entertainment, sports, business, community, and the arts. You’ll find people such as Beyoncé, Andrew Gillum, Tarana Burke, and Colin Kapernick.

The Root was able to determine this year’s list by using their own formula. Each individual was ranked by reach, the people they touch through media and Twitter followers, and their substance, the impact of their work, graded on a scale of 0 to 10.
