Purrfect Love Cat Rescue
The term “feral” may make you think of an animal that is angry, mean, even scary. But the truth is, many feral cats can still be tamed. They also need safe homes with nurturing owners so they can live their best life. Purrfect Love Cat Rescue is one animal rescue in the greater Birmingham area that helps give feral cats a better life.
Located in Pelham, the mission of Purrfect Love Cat Rescue is to end the suffering and overpopulation of feral, abandoned and abused cats through rescue and rehabilitation.
Here’s a stat for you: According to Purrfect Love Cat Rescue’s website, without human intervention, 50 percent of feral kittens die within their first year. Sad, I know. But this is why organizations like Purrfect Love Cat Rescue are so great.
One of Bham Now’s team members, Terri Robertson, has adopted three cats from Birmingham rescue organizations. One of her cats, Lulu, is a rehabilitation feral cat from Purrfect Love Cat Rescue.
“She’s the biggest lap cat I’ve ever seen,” Robertson said. “But because of her background, it takes her an extra long time to get used to new people.”
Another fact about Lulu is that she has a tipped ear because she was considered a TNR (trap, neuter and return) cat. When a cat is dubbed a TNR, it is highly unlikely for them to become tame. Surprisingly, Lulu did, and she was entered into Purrfect Love Cat Rescue’s foster system.
If you are unfamiliar with eartipping, it means that 1/4″ is removed from the tip of a cat’s left ear. This is the universal sign of an “altered feral cat” (a feral cat that has been spayed/neutered and also been rehabilitated).
Another reason Robertson likes animal rescues is because they use foster networks, which help socialize animals to make them more adoptable.
“In Lulu’s case, as a feral cat who became tame, she would have been highly stressed and probably non-adoptable in a shelter system,” Robertson said. “But, as part of a rescue’s foster system, she had a chance to find her home with me.”

Save Our Strays is a nonprofit all volunteer organization developed and founded on one key principle—that no animal in their care will be put down.
All cats are cared for in volunteers’ homes until they are ready for adoption.

Steel City Cat Rescue
Steel City Cat Rescue—a 501c3 nonprofit located in Birmingham—is all about the felines! Meow!
They rescue cats and kittens from all walks of life, including feral born, stray, owner surrender and abandoned. They also have some real cuties currently up for adoption that are in need of your TLC.
Adoption fees:
- $75 – Single cat
- $100 – Bonded pair of cats

Peace, Love And Dog Paws Rescue, Inc.

Specialty Breed Rescues
Bama Bully Reserve
I don’t know about you, but Pit Bulls are one of my favorite dog breeds to gush over. Unfortunately, this breed often has a bad rep. But it’s not their fault. Any animal will become mean and vicious if trained to be that way. This is also one reason why so many pit bulls are in need of animal rescue organizations like the Bama Bully Reserve.
The Bama Bully Reserve is the first Bully-specific rescue located in Alabama and is run entirely through the help of volunteers. As a member of the Pit Bull Rescue Alliance (PBRA), Bama Bully Reserve is comprised of individual, independent organizations that are dedicated to Pit Bull rescue, education and advocacy.
All dogs up for adoption via the organization live in foster homes until they find their furever home.
Adoption fees:
- Puppies – $250
- Adults – $200
- Seniors (age 7+) – $150
Cavalier Rescue Of Alabama
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels—or Cavaliers—are another dog breed that many in Birmingham are committed to rescuing.
With help from the Cavalier Rescue of Alabama, this nonprofit organization is dedicated to the rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing this beloved breed.
Adoption fees:
- Healthy dogs (age 2 and under) – $650
- Adult dogs – $350-$550
- Senior dogs and special needs dogs will be lower based on care required.

Weimaraner Rescue Of The South (WRS)
Weimaraners—a tongue twister of a name, but a truly beautiful dog breed. Don’t even get me started on how adorable Weimaraner puppies are. (Insert the girliest squeals and most annoying baby-talk ever!)
But, I’m definitely not the only one who loves this breed—the Weimaraner Rescue of the South (WRS) does too. And they show their love by rescuing, rehabilitation and re-homing Weimaraners in need across Alabama.
Adoption fees:
- Puppies (under 6 months old) – $375 + $100 refundable spay/neuter deposit
- Adult dogs – $300
- Senior dogs (age 9+) – $225

While some rescues specifically tend to just cats or just dogs, some, like Big Hearts and Wet Noses Animal Rescue, dedicates their time and resources to both.
