Birmingham native Nicole Lamb had this to say about the upcoming  Red Mountain Theatre Company’s production of Smokey Joe’s Cafe.

“Everyone deserves and needs an escape.”

Opening this Friday, May 11, and running through May 27 at the Red Mountain Cabaret Theatre, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Broadway’s longest running musical revue in history, will be performed by the Magic City’s most talented and dynamic actors.

One such performer is Lamb, who will be playing the role of fun-loving Delee in Smokey Joe’s Cafe.

Recently, Bham Now interviewed her about how she got her start at the Red Mountain Theatre Company and what to expect with Birmingham’s own special version of Broadway’s most successful musical revue.

Bham Now: Talented local performers make the Red Mountain Theatre Company special. Tell us how you got your start?

Nicole Lamb: Back when Red Mountain Theatre Company was called Summerfest, my parents took me to their Youth Program Showcase (Conservatory). It was the first time  I saw kids my age doing theater and performing. At the end of the Showcase my parents turned to me and ask me, “Is this something you are interested in doing.”  At that moment, I was hooked.

I said,  “yes please!”

The following summer they signed me up for the “boot camp” That summer they were casting Annie. I had no idea if I was even good. I was only nine.

They (RMTC) cast me as Mollie, the youngest orphan and from there, I knew this is what I wanted to do.  Which I know,  it sounds kinda ridiculous for a 9 year old  to say, but truly that’s what I wanted to do from that moment on.  Red Mountain Theatre Company became my life. Rehearsals and shows, growing up in the youth program.

I came back after my freshman year of college and did Les Miserables. I just can’t shake the RMTC ( she chuckled)!  Since then, I’ve been working in New York for three years.

Bham Now: Tell us about your role in Smokey Joe’s Cafe?

Nicole Lamb: I am playing Delee.  Smokey Joe’s is a music revue -its a juke-box musical.  I’m playing Delle, but I’m pretty much playing myself in this character. Henry our director asked us to find five adjectives to describe our characters.  She is flirty, a spitfire, fun, dances a lot and having good time. I’m only 23. I usually get cast as the girl next door sweet character. Delee has some of those moments, but this is definitely more of a sexy role – a make it your own. Every role I’ve ever played represents a piece of me.

Bham Now: What songs are you singing?

Nicole Lamb: One of the songs I am singing is Falling by Elvis Pressley.  It  is a little bit different  version from him.  I like to compare it to Hopelessly Devoted To You from Grease by the way it is arranged.  The women in Act II sing I Am a Woman. That my favorite moment in the show.  It is going to rock the house down.

Bham Now: Why people should go to see Smokey Joe’s Cafe?

Nicole Lamb: Everyone deserves and needs an escape. It is two hours of your time escaping and listening to songs that remind you of the past, nostalgic, throwback songs, feel good. We all deserve to feel good right now. To laugh, even a cry a little. Take some time for yourself, have a little fun, tap your toes and smile!
