History in the making, the college football world comes to Regions Tradition NCR Celebrity Pro-Am

On Wednesday May 16, 2018, history will be made.

The attention of the entire college football world will focus on the Regions Tradition in Hoover as championship coaches Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn and Kirby Smart meet on the links in the Regions Tradition NCR Celebrity Pro-Am at the Greystone Golf and Country Club.

That’s right.

Saban and Smart will pick up their budding rivalry where they left off after a classic National Championship Game, with Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide outlasting Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs in overtime. Alabama’s 26-23 victory gave Saban his sixth national title, matching the record set by the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant.

That championship, we all recall, was decided on one of the most dramatic game-ending touchdown passes in the storied history of college football.

If that weren’t enough gridiron-to-the-green drama, Saban and Smart will be joined at Greystone by Malzahn, whose SEC West champion Auburn Tigers beat both Alabama and Georgia in 2017.

This IS the Football Capital of the South. Again.

“Everyone remembers when they played the Iron Bowl and other classic games at legendary Legion Field with that proud title painted on the facade: Football Capital of the South,” said Gene Hallman, president and CEO of Bruno Event Team, which manages the Regions Tradition. “With all the big names coming to Greystone for the Celebrity Pro-Am, this will be the center of the college football universe.”

Bo Knows Golf

Joining the friendly battle among the head coaches at the Pro-Am will be the greatest athlete of all time – Bo Jackson, Auburn’s 1985 Heisman Trophy winner.

Does Bo know golf?

Three years ago, Jackson stunned the crowd at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Golf Challenge when he crushed a drive 332 yards.

The 2018 edition of the Regions Tradition Pro-Am is so significant, the SEC Network has dispatched legendary talk show host Paul Finebaum back to his old home to cover it. Along with Finebaum, the SEC Network will be represented by popular personalities Laura Rutledge and former Alabama great Greg McElroy.

McElroy will be part of a special foursome of former Alabama quarterbacks with Jay Barker, Brodie Croyle and John Parker Wilson. Call them the Crimson Fore!

Rivalries Abound

The Regions Tradition NCR Pro-Am is not just a competition among SEC coaches and former players. Alabama State Coach Donald Hill-Eley and Alabama A&M Coach Connell Maynor will tee off together to continue the Magic City Classic rivalry.

UAB Coach Bill Clark, fresh off the winningest season in the school’s Football Bowl Subdivision history, will take part in a new competition at the Pro-Am, the Celebrity Putt for Children’s. Clark and some of the other assembled stars will try a 50-foot putt on the practice green, and each of them who makes it will earn a $20,000 donation for Children’s of Alabama, the primary beneficiary of the Regions Tradition.

With all the rivalries breaking out, it is good to see a genuine peacemaker, Birmingham’s own former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, bring her golf game to this once-in-a-lifetime event for lovers of college football. Rice herself is a former member of the College Football Playoff selection committee.
