According to Eli Anding nearly all of La-Z-Boy’s Furniture Galleries sofas, recliners and accessories are made in the United States.

“Two cousins, Edward M. Knabusch and Edwin J. Shoemaker (the founder’s of La-Z-Boy),out of Michigan came up with the idea to produce a reclining chair 90 years ago,” stated Anding.

“They established their first plant in Newton, Mississippi. Fast forward to today, there are 5 plants in the U.S., and now La-Z-Boy is one of the last furniture stores that locally manufactures the items they sell in their stores.”

Their manufacturing plants are leaders in quality and safety as well as proud supporters of their local communities. All Combined, La-Z-Boy factories produce an average of 8,000 furnishings per day. In total, the company employs more than 7,500 Americans in five cities.

The Dayton, Tennessee plant, located just three hours away from Birmingham, has been recognized as one of the top 10 Best Plants in North America by Industry Week magazine.

“The Dayton plant is the largest in the country, and it actually is two plants in one. One makes the stationary or non-reclining furniture and one plant makes the reclining furniture,” added Curt Morris, owner of the La-Z-Boy stores in the Birmingham area.

“The employees at the Dayton facility can’t be more proud of working there. There are some folks who have been at the factory 20-30 years. The loyalty and the pride is absolutely amazing.”

American sourced and American made

Along with building the sofas and recliners, the materials are also locally sourced, employing workers and pumping much needed income into local communities throughout the South. For example, the foam for the furniture comes from Mississippi.

The steel is supplied by communities in Alabama and Tennessee. The springs are produced out in Indiana and North Carolina. And the hardwood frames are created in Kentucky.

“There are very few companies in our industry that have not gone offshore. In many of these cities where these plants are located, La-Z-Boy is the largest employer. We are family,” concluded Morris.
