One of the things that make Asbury unique is its Sheperds Ministry – a program dedicated to children and individuals with special needs.

Shepherds Ministry’s key purpose is to create an environment where special needs children have the opportunity to:

  • Worship God
  • Learn about the love and joy of Jesus

“We want special needs individuals and their families to feel welcome at Asbury,” said Kristin Bunden, co-leader of Shepherds Ministry. “We know that some special needs families are hesitant to leave their children during Sunday school or children’s church, so we have ministry members available every Sunday morning to assist and assure them that their children are loved and taken care of.”

One way in which Shepherds Ministry helps those with special needs is by providing certain sensory inputs.

“We know that some special needs individuals are sensitive to certain sensory inputs and that others crave it,” said Kristin.

Because of this, Asbury has put together boxes with headphones and items such as fidget spinners, therapy putty and stretchy balls that are available during worship and other events.

“We want to learn about each of our special needs friends and how they can nurture their abilities to increase their faith,” said Kristin.

One event where Shepherds Ministry will be providing their services and special boxes will be at Asbury’s upcoming Easter Open House Weekend on March 17 and 18.

Open House Weekend will celebrate the grand opening of Asbury’s brand-new sanctuary. It will also feature an #AsburyEggstravaganza egg hunt, carnival rides and games, delicious Birmingham food trucks and more!

During the Eggstravaganza on Saturday, Shepherds Ministry will be available to minister to children with special needs and their families. Just look for the special needs tent that will be set up outside near the egg hunt and carnival rides. Along with providing special needs boxes, the tent will also provide a calm and welcoming space for those who would benefit from having time away from the busyness and excitement of the event.

Members and the community are encouraged and welcome to stop by the tent and learn all about Shepherds Ministry and their role within Asbury United Methodist Church.
