In a recent interview with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s Chris Confessore, he called Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue one of the ultimate pieces of “feel good” music.

Those two words, “feel good,”  also best describe not only Rhapsody in Blue, but the entire upcoming March lineup of inspirational performances by  the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.

Check it out.

Different Trains: Contemporary Visions

Starting the month off right, on March 6, 7:30pm at Workplay in Birmingham, as part of Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s 2017-2018 Concertmaster & Friends Series, a pair of string quartets will reflect upon life during World War II and honor those affected by it.

Titled Different Trains: Contemporary Visions, this intimate concert featuring Steve Reich’s Different Trains for String Quartet & Tape alongside Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 will provide a moving and thoughtful evening in a unique setting.

Gershwin in Hollywood with Rhapsody in Blue

On March 10, 8:00pm at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, the ASO presents: Gershwin in Hollywood with Rhapsody in Blue.

Leonard Bernstein described Rhapsody in Blue as “terrific, inspired, and God-given.”

Conductor Chris Confessore illustrates why Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is beloved and unforgettable.

“Our upcoming Gershwin in Hollywood POPS Concert features a piece of music everyone loves – Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue! It has everything – gorgeous melodies, infectious rhythms, and vivid orchestral colors. It has been featured in Hollywood films and even in airline commercials.

Pianist Steve Beck joins us as our soloist for the Rhapsody you know, and another you might not know – Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody!

Originally titled “Rhapsody in Rivets” it is a musical sequel, so it makes sense that it originated as a Hollywood film score that Gershwin eventually adapted for the concert hall! Our program features other musical highlights from Gershwin’s work in Hollywood.

It’s the ultimate concert of “feel good” music.”

ASO & ASYO Side by Side!

The third performance this month, ASO & ASYO Side by Side!, will take place at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center on Sunday, March 18 at 3pm.

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra teams up with the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra to spotlight romantic composers with music from Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, and more.

Working side by side with the next generation of musicians is inspirational, according to Confessore.

“I am delighted to once again be leading the ASO/ASYO Side-by-Side Concert. This event is an incredible opportunity for the young musicians of the ASYO to share the stage with the world-class musicians of our ASO. The collaboration ends up being just as inspiring for the professionals as it is for the students. You’ll be inspired as well when you hear the concert. It’s a wonderful way to spend Sunday afternoon.”

This month, reflect, feel good and be inspired by your Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Purchase tickets, online at alabamasymphony.org, in person at 1200 10th Ave. South, Birmingham, or call 205.975.2787.
