Guess what, Birmingham! If you’re a fan of Wintzell’s Oyster House, then we have some exciting news for you.

Birmingham-based Hallmark Hospitality Group, Inc. have made the decision to open six Wintzell’s locations in the metro area over the next four years. The expansion plans for the restaurants were delivered by Frank Hall, CEO of Hallmark Hospitality. The company recently bought the Wintzell’s location in Fultondale, Alabama.

Six more locations to come in Birmingham? That’s a whole lot of seafood!

Wintzell’s story first began in 1938 when it was founded by J. Oliver Wintzell. Starting out as a simple six-stool oyster bar in Mobile, Alabama, eventually became a big success and has now been serving Alabama for more than 80 years.

Their most praise-worthy item? The oysters! Serving only the freshest oysters (and seafood) from the Gulf Coast, you can get them:

  • Raw
  • Fried
  • Chargrilled – freshly shucked oysters on the half shell chargrilled over an open flame, smothered with butter and cheese.
  • Rockefeller – oysters covered with a mixture of spinach, butter, seasonings and bread crumbs.
  • Bienville – covered with shrimp, crabmeat and parmesan.
  • Monterey – topped with jalapenos, smoked bacon and melted cheddar cheese.
  • Carnival – covered with lump crabmeat, spinach and hollandaise sauce.

There are also plenty of seafood dishes to choose from, such as fried catfish, bacon-wrapped shrimp, redfish, flounder and salmon.

Besides oysters, seafood and a fine reputation, Hall said that they also hope to attract Birmingham lunch customers with the restaurant’s new $7.99 lunch menu – drink included!

The company also plans to focus on catering, large group reservations and community outreach.

But there’s more to Wintzell’s than seafood. Enjoy nachos covered with Jamaican-style chili, or hot wings with classic buffalo or mango Habanero sauce. Steak, hamburgers and tacos are also on the menu.

Don’t forget the sides! Choose from a wide range of items, such as french fries, fried okra, coleslaw, collard greens, cheese grits, Cajun rice and more.

Here’s a further look at the menu.
