Small business Monday – spotlight on Painted Personalities

I’m Elaine Tindill-Rohr, and Painted Personalities is my business. We do face and body art for parties, events, festivals, and other appointments. The types of face and body art are face painting, airbrush temporary tattoos, temporary glitter tattoos, henna, body painting, and some special effects makeup.  We don’t have a studio space address, but go to our clients for their jobs.

We’ve been in business since 2005, though I have been face painting and playing with special effect longer than that. I got into face painting by accident, which for this business seems to be a fairly common occurrence. I was a volunteer clown in college, and learned to facepaint at that time. After graduating, I came back to Birmingham and joined the Birmingham Jaycees, who had the haunted house in Lakeview at the time. I did haunt makeup for the house for 15 years, until it closed in 2004.

The toss up for the most unusual thing I do is between the special effects and the body painting. I body paint for appointments here in town. I occasionally am asked to do special effects work for appointments, for film projects, or Halloween.

One of the most meaningful things I have done was be a part of a team that provided bodypainting for the Joy To Life Foundation for their magazine for October of 2017. Joy to Life has a magazine that re-branded itself. As a part of that process, they chose to use a team of bodypainters to paint breast cancer survivors for the cover and an article. The survivors are all featured in their bodypaint with the article. It was a long couple of days to paint, but a very rewarding process and outcome. I love what I do with this because I never know what the next request will be. And even if I am working a party where 99% of the girls ask for the same thing that the birthday girl gets, and the boys all ask for the same design, it never is the same. Each child’s face is unique, and the same design is different on each face.
