Welcome to the Bham Now Nature Roundup for the week of February 3.

This past week, Bham Now launched its three  part series on recycling in Birmingham. The first edition provides the history behind recycling from the founding of the first drop-off sites at a Vestavia Hills shopping center and on the campus of UAB to today’s curbside recycling programs.

Bottomline, the figure that truly stands out is 16%.  That’s the amount we annually reduce our waste and recycling in Alabama according to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. The national average is 34.3%

We’ve got a steep climb ahead of us in Birmingham and the state of Alabama to just recycle at the national average. The next two editions will make the case why it needs to done.
