The weekend will be here before we know it. Can I get a Friyay?! For all you Birmingham youths (okay, adults too!), check out some of the cool events happening in the ‘ham this weekend!

Red Shoe Run

Help spread the word and celebrate family, fundraising and the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama (RHMCA) by attending the 14th Annual Red Shoe Run in Homewood this January 27.

The Red Shoe Run offers something for everyone with a 10-mile run, 5K run/walk and 1 mile run/walk. There is also a Snoozers option if you just want to donate to the cause.

All proceeds benefit RMHCA to continue the mission of providing families with a place of hope, happiness, growth and healing when traveling to receive medical care for their child at a Birmingham-area hospital.

Birmingham T1D Family Party

Fun will be had for all ages at the Birmingham T1D Family Party hosted by Camp Seale Harris. Camp Seale Harris (also known as Southeastern Diabetes Education Services), is a nonprofit organization that educates, encourages and empowers children with diabetes and their families to live well with diabetes. Living Well Programs include:

  • Overnight Camps
  • Family Camps
  • Day Camps
  • Camp Community Programs

During this event, join type one diabetic (T1D) friends and family as Camp Seale Harris kicks off 2018 in a laser-ific way.

Here’s what to expect at this event:

  • Children (age 6-16) will have the chance to play laser tag, group games and more.
  • Info on 2018 Camp Seale Harris diabetes camps for kids, teens and parents.
  • Learn about new camps, scholarships, volunteering and more.Hear campers share their camp experience.
  • Meet current camp staff.
  • Educational Q&A sessions with Dr. Hussein Latif from Children’s of Alabama (for parents)
  • Networking with other T1D families in the area.
  • Registration Kick-Off and info on the Diabetes WALK on April 22 at Veteran’s Park in Birmingham.
  • Register for the walk before/at the Kick-Off and receive a $25 Visa gift card.

What’s Next Alabama – BiCentennial Youth Summit 2018

Get inspired, Birmingham youth! Now is the time for you to share your visions for the state of Alabama and present them to Birmingham’s community leaders.

On January 27, the Alabama Youth Alliance will host a “What’s Next Alabama” BiCentennial Youth Summit 2018 to discuss a variety of topics including:

  • Equal access to quality education
  • Economic opportunityEnvironment and transportation
  • Access to healthy food

The Alabama Youth Alliance is a combination of representatives from multiple youth leadership organizations from the Birmingham area. Their mission is to educate, inspire and empower youth to advocate for a better future.

The organizations involved include:

The summit will consist of a set forum and breakout sessions. Youth will also have the opportunity to share their vision for the future with elected officials and community leaders.

“It has been the most gratifying journey to see young people and leaders of youth organizations across the metro area come together as this group has over the last year in an effort to make their voices heard,” said Jennifer Hatchett, Executive Director of YouthServe Inc. “After Saturday, our hope is to continue the work of the Alabama Youth Alliance, building on the ideas presented. We would like to bring more youth organizations to the table, collaborating together and with caring community leaders to a make positive impact on the issues they care about most.”

Seating is limited and will be accommodated on a first come first served basis.
