Find out what our Birmingham City Council approved on Tuesday

On Tuesday, the Birmingham City Council passed a resolution that will provide funding for emergency repairs to Rickwood Field stadium. The council accepted the $1,006,400 lump sum bid from JJ Morley Enterprises, Inc., who stated that the repairs are scheduled to be completed prior to this year’s Rickwood Classic.  Here’s what else they approved…

Quick background on Rickwood Field

Rickwood Field, named after former Birmingham Barons owner Allen “Rick” Woodward, is the oldest professional baseball park in the United States. It has been home to the Rickwood Classic since 1996, until last year, when the game was forced to move to Regions Field due to failing infrastructure inside the park.

Other highlights from Tuesday’s City Council Meeting Include:

• Councilman Darrell O’Quinn, District 5, will be hosting “LoveOnBham”, an event encouraging citizens to visit Birmingham neighborhoods and post to Instagram sharing the people and places of Birmingham that they love. Details can be found here https://www.facebook.com/events/175448293055914/.
• The City Council passed a resolution to appropriate $83,500 to Ramsay-McCormick Repairs, $62,151.60 to Southern Museum of Flight Elevator Repair, $92,895.60 to Boutwell Freight Elevator Repair, $109,009 to Museum of Art Elevator Repair, $50,000 to DYS HVAC and $94,530 to Museum of Art Boiler.
• The City Council passed a resolution to accept a bid of $195,900 to renovate Harriman Park Recreation Center. The renovations will focus on updating kitchens and restrooms, exterior painting, and providing new playground and basketball equipment.
• Councilman O’Quinn announced that there will be an opening on the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority and encouraged anyone interested in applying to submit their resume and letter of interest to darrell.oquinn@birminghamal.gov.
