This past Sunday morning Bham Now traveled across 3rd, 4th and 5th Avenues South looking for outdoor murals dotting the city landscape.

Beginning on 3rd Ave South and 12th Street at Ted’s Restaurant, we ventured east toward Crestwood Boulevard, back west on 4th and the multi -lane traffic on 5th Avenue South.

Here are the outdoor murals we discovered.

Ted’s Restaurant – 328 12th Street South

A Birmingham institution, Ted’s has been around since 1973.  Visit owners Tasos & Beba Touloupis, and see why their slogan is “Where Friendly Gets Downright Fresh!”

Wells Fargo – 316 18th Street South

The six-foot-tall, 34-foot-wide mural is located at the Wells Fargo bank branch wall at 316 18th St. South near UAB.  Its has 18 images of Martin Luther King Jr., the “four little girls” and photos of Civil Rights leaders including Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. The mural commemorates the 50 Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

Four Birmingham Icons – Between 4th Ave & 5th Ave. on 41st South

Between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue on 41st in the middle of Avondale’s thriving arts and entertainment district, a new, three-story mural commemorates four of Birmingham’s cultural icons: civil rights leader Fred Shuttlesworth, jazz legend Sun Ra, social activist Angela Davis and photojournalist Spider Martin.

Hop City – 2924 3rd Ave S

Unveiled in September, Hop City celebrated its fifth anniversary in the Magic City with this colorful mural painted by local artist Drew Lormand. The painting is now a prominent landmark alongside the Martin Biscuit Building.
