The Bare Hands Gallery annual Day of the Dead Festival is a celebration of lost loved ones. Dia de Los Muertos is a great experience that honors the tradition of Mexico’s remembrance holiday. It’s back in Birmingham for the 15th year. Come out and see what this holiday is all about!

The festival will be hosted in a new location this year at Pepper Place Thursday, November 2 from 4 to 10 p.m.

Come take part in a look back at a lost loved one’s life. Join a party in their honor. This festival is inspired by Mexico’s sacred Day of the Dead tradition, the tradition of Decoration Day here in the South, New Orleans Jazz Funeral Processions and Birmingham’s own history.

If you’re interested in Grammy-Winning music acts, jazz parades, Mexican food and beer, then this is the perfect event for you! There will be art and craft booths, and face painting… Apparently Day of the Dead face painting is quite a thing now. There will be fun children’s activities too.

And of course most importantly, there will be alters erected to remember your loved ones. Bare Hands encourages people to bring small mementos of their loved ones to place on the alters, and to share.

Once a misunderstood holiday, Day of the Dead is becoming more popular as people want to honor their loved ones in a positive way. Locals of the community and neighbors from surrounding areas have attended this vibrant and really special celebration every year since 2002.

Matt Layne, president of the Board of Directors of Bare Hands, Inc. is happy about the move to Pepper Place.

“Our first 13 celebrations of Día de los Muertos were held just a few blocks away at our former gallery space, and we are so excited to bring the event back to the heart of the city.”

Pepper Place which already hosts the weekly Farmers Market every Saturdayis the perfect place to hold the cultural festival. There is lots of space for everyone as well as a great Mexican restaurant Cantina Tortilla Grill.

As Callan Childs, director of design and marketing at Sloss Real Estate, explained,

“Dia de los Muertos not only celebrates those who have come and gone, but brings our community together, and that’s what we are all about at Pepper Place.”

Details:

  • Tickets are $10 for adults.
