Welcome to the Bham Now Nature Roundup for September 29th.
A couple of weeks ago, the Alabama environmental community lost one of its true giants – Dr. Bob Mount.
I was fortunate to work with Bob closely in the early 90s when I served as Executive Director of the Alabama Conservancy (now the Alabama Environmental Council). Bob at the time was a board member.
I delighted in my visits with him at Auburn. The stacks of newspapers in his office. He would warmly greet me, and never fail to hand me clippings from the newspapers from across the state. The articles were always about Alabama’s environment and politics.
We always talked politics. He was a Republican when being a Republican wasn’t cool.
We always strategized – how do we protect the special places and more importantly the snakes, turtles, reptiles – in many ways the critters that frighten many Alabamians.
Not an easy task here in Alabama. Bob taught me to be fearless when it came to Alabama’s biodiversity and natural wonders – especially defending snakes. That’s because he was forthright and fearless himself.
That’s why we loved him. He mentored me and so many students and people to fearlessly love nature – even the critters, especially the snakes, people tend to be afraid of.
It was his book – The Reptiles and Amphibians of Alabama written 20 years ago that opened the world of snakes, frogs, turtles and salamanders to all of us.
We are all now fearlessly the Bob Mount generation.
