For the first time, Birmingham, AL was competing on the national tech stage with its Sloss Tech event, but if you didn’t go last year, don’t worry!
The event was such a success that another will be hosted this July 14th, at the Lyric Theatre, and we expect it to be even better.
Sloss Tech, Last Year
The original Sloss Tech hosted a wide variety of local and national names in business.
From Bham speaker panels involving Dave Gray of Daxko, Bill Smith of Shipt and many more, to national names in tech and entrepreneurship like Andy Grignon and Gary Vaynerchuck; it was certainly a “win” for our city.
“Last year, for being a first year event, was really successful, and the event itself had a lot of positive energy around it,” Jennifer Skjellum, President and CEO of TechBirmingham exclaimed to BhamNow.
“The attendance was strong (with about 600 people), and the unexpected thing that happened, as a result, was the continued conversation around Sloss Tech; whether locally, or from ‘digital influencers’ in other cities.”
Not only did those who attend love the festival, the Lyric Theatre was almost full! That’s an incredible accomplishment for a previously-unknown tech festival.
Starting Linup – Year 2
The Birmingham tech event returns this year with an even stronger lineup.
The headliners include NFL Hall-of-Famer and entrepreneur, Tiki Barber, and YouTube star Casey Neistat!
The reason for these two is simple; both have successfully “exited” a startup company and continue to make waves in the digital and entrepreneurial scenes.
P.S. – “Exiting” a startup is a term for selling or divesting your ownership.
Big-name celebrity entrepreneurs aren’t everything, however. Sloss Tech promotes local entrepreneurship and the city of Birmingham in general!
Following the idea of pitching our city to the world, TechBirmingham and Telegraph Creative, a digital marketing company which organized the event, have brought on Birmingham natives who own, or have owned, successful companies themselves.
This years local speakers include:
- CEO and Founder of Shipt, Bill Smith
- Founder of Mental Floss, Will Pearson
- Founder of the organization KultureCity, Dr. Julian Maha.
“Birmingham’s entrepreneurial community is expanding and the tech ecosystem is thriving.
Momentum comes from Birmingham’s accomplishments being recognized by a national spotlight and events like Sloss Tech help attract talent, investors, and visitors to our city.
Bringing in people to see first hand the variety and diversity of companies we have here in addition to the food, culture and lifestyle we are becoming recognized for, goes far to help elevate Birmingham’s profile as a national player.”
– Jennifer Skjellum, President of TechBirmingham

Before you buy a ticket, you might have a few final questions… Questions like, “Why Birmingham?” or “Will it be pioneering?”
To that, they say, Work Your Magic.
TechBirmingham started its Work Your Magic campaign to promote technological innovation and growth in the Magic City.
By providing a way to browse jobs, learn about upcoming industry events, and hear from successful members of Birmingham’s tech community, TechBirmingham hopes that our city will grow into the potential that an information economy creates.
Tech Birmingham and Telegraph Creative work hard to pitch Birmingham; just as entrepreneurs pitch businesses. Both Sloss Tech and Work Your Magic show off our city’s opportunity and entrepreneurial spirit.
“Sloss Tech is an epic, one day, tech and entertainment event focused on raising awareness about Birmingham’s growing tech and startup scene.
…getting people to see Birmingham in a way they have not seen it before.”
– Skjellum proclaimed
