Specializing in monitoring online testing for students and professionals, the local tech firm has offices in California, the Philippines, and soon in Dominica.

A proctored exam is one that is overseen by an impartial individual (a proctor) who monitors a student during an exam. The proctor ensures the security and integrity of the exam process. ProctorU aims to make this process efficient and secure for online testing.

According to the BBJ, this past summer, the former CEO resigned (who lived in Livermore, Ca,) explaining the recent location of the company headquarters and gave way to Scott McFarland in June of 2016, filling the gap.

McFarland and the entire engineering team of ProctorU resides in Birmingham – making the move a practical decision.

“We have a longstanding relationship with UAB, so we hire a lot of students out of UAB and they’re a long term customer of ours. We are working closely with them and it’s a great relationship.”

Having the company headquarters localized in Birmingham, and close to the main technical team, will allow Proctor U to to manage more efficiently.

ProctorU recently made two big announcements; one was that the company has secured a patent for its process of proctoring an exam online in a live format.  ProctorU has also partnered with the Computing Technology Industry Association, or CompTIA, to offer the association’s project management certification test online.

“While it sounds like we’re doing a lot, all of this is coincidental. We see probably 30 percent growth in the next coming year and were releasing new artificial intelligence to our platform, which is really exciting.”

– McFarland explained to the BBJ

The Birmingham based company has become the largest online proctoring service in the World.  They monitor over 2 million exams with about 1,000 partner institutions in 129 countries.

Who is Scott McFarland?  According to ProctorU’s website:

Scott McFarland has spent the last 25 years managing and leading venture-backed technology companies, and joined ProctorU in the summer of 2016. His main focus has been to bring teams together by creating actionable strategy plans, building enterprise value and producing results that have led to acquisitions by Computer Sciences Corporation, McKesson, Stanley Black and Decker and others. As part of senior leadership at Emageon, McFarland led the operations division through significant growth period from 2001 to a public offering in 2005. More recently, McFarland was CEO at Awarix, General Manager at AeroScout, and COO at PerfectServe, a secure clinical communications system.
