Alabama’s Jeff Sessions, the Senator turned Attorney General, turned media bad boy

Alright, Mr. Sessions, I hope you’re ready for your closeup, because you’ve been shining in the public spotlight since your February Senate confirmation.

This week has been a long one, particularly, from that Russian contacts controversy that the Washington Post first disclosed last Wednesday, to a starring snub in Saturday Night Live’s most-recent opening skit.

You know, the one that combined “Forrest Gump”, that infamous pie scene from “The Help” and you, all rolled up onto one park bench.

But, not all the spotlight has been critical, and you haven’t shied away from any of it. I have to give that to you. Heck, WaPo even published an editorial calling you a “Victim of the new McCarthyism.” Oh, and The Hill opines that you are going to be just fine.

In a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday, the former Alabama Senator turned Attorney General defended his Russia testimony in writing and said he did not mislead Congress.

His letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee came after he recused himself from any Russia investigations. President Trump has defended Sessions, and said that calls for his recusal and resignation amount to a “total witch hunt” from Democrats.

Politico reports that Sessions said he “honestly” answered a question during his confirmation hearing from Minnesota Sen. Al Franken about contact with the Russians as a Trump surrogate.

“I did not mention communications I had had with the Russian Ambassador over the years because the question did not ask about them,” he said to Franken.

It doesn’t look like Session’s spotlight will fade anytime soon, with pundits on both sides of the fence keeping him all shiny and bright and center stage.

Oh, and don’t forget about this list of Representatives and Senators calling for his resignation. Meanwhile, Fox News is reporting just how many Democrats also met with the Russian ambassador since 2013.

There’s no denying Sessions’ has had one heck of a week, whether you categorize his talk with the Russian ambassador as a scandalous or just another meeting he took as a member of the Armed Services Committee.

What do you think, Birmingham? It’s your turn to weigh in on the bright lights being cast on our former Alabama Senator in the big city.
