Developers Selected for Southtown Court Overhaul
2016 brought wind of a potential redevelopment of the Southtown Court property located between UAB and Saint Vincent’s Hospital on University Boulevard.
In a recent report, we discovered how important the decision to redevelop or not to truly is, and what the community thinks.
Upon many discussions and future decisions, one has finally been made – who will be involved in the development/coordinating team.
There has been NO approval to redevelop on the land.
The decision made today simply puts together a team of organizers that have come up with a plan for the possible redevelopment.
The Team – named “Southside Development Company”
- Bayer Properties
- Brasfield & Gorrie
- the Benoit Group
- A.G. Gaston Construction
- SPM Property Management
- Corporate Realty
- BREC Development
These partners approached the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District in December to propose the following:
The Team’s Plan –Â Mixed-use Development
- Mixed-income Development: subsidized public housing units & units at normal market rate
- Parking Lot(s)
- Affordable Senior Community
- Office
- Medical Space
- Green Space
- Retail Parcels
- POSSIBLY a Hotel
“The master development agreement would have to be approved by the board. That’s when you really get into the nitty gritty…”
– Micheal O. Lundy, CEO of the HABD
There are certainly mixed emotions on this matter.
Mr. Lundy exclaimed in a statement –
“It’s an excellent time for redevelopment.
This is going to be in the residents’ best interest, and it’s going to be in the best interest of the city of Birmingham…”
Again, no final approval to redevelop has been made. Therefore we would once again love feed back from the Birmingham community on the matter.
- Should we Re-develop
- If so, how would you Re-develop
- Should we not Re-develop
- If not, why would you not Re-develop?
