Don’t flush garbage down the toilet! Major Sewage Spill in Northport (again).

Northport, near Tuscaloosa, announced another major sewage spill this year in the Black Warrior River. People flushing diapers, rags and garbage are the culprit.

Between 10,000 and 100,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the Black Warrior River as a result of a lift station malfunction. Northport Mayor Bobby Herndon says that rags or household garbage got flushed down toilets at businesses and homes and caused the pumps to stop working.

“Raw sewage making it into the river in a populated area is not a good thing,” Nelson Brooke of the Black Warrior Riverkeeper said. “Unfortunately, a good amount of sewage did make it into the river.
