62 Parker High School seniors honored by Rotaract of Birmingham

The Rotaract Club of Birmingham will host the first ever College Signing Day on Friday, April 28, at A.H. Parker High School. The ceremony will honor the achievements of 62 Parker High School college-bound seniors.

Khadijah Abdullah, key note speaker

College Signing Day will celebrate graduating seniors, showcase student leaders and inspire younger classes to continue their education. Khadijah Abdullah, executive director of Teach For America and a Birmingham City Schools graduate, will be the keynote speaker.

Birmingham’s Will Pearson to lead podcast for HowStuffWorks

Will Pearson and his business partner, Mangesh Hattikudur, founded Mental Floss magazine while they were still in college at Duke University in 2001.  Mental Floss, which gained popularity based on its fun, inquisitive tone, grew over the years to be a successful national brand and was bought by a publisher in New York.

Civitan Club of Birmingham marks 100th anniversary

Few companies and even fewer people live to be 100 years old, but the Civitan Club of Birmingham—the original club of Civitan International—celebrated that milestone birthday with a reception at UAB. Their official birthday is March 17, 2017. Members of the club hosted guests and media at the Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) on March 9th to bring awareness to the good work researchers are doing at the center.

Foundation, (ED) was directing traffic in and out of the Harbert Center like it was an airport.  Approximately 200 11th graders representing all 7 Birmingham city schools came prepared to get coaching on interview skills from local Rotarians.  Mock interviews were set up at tables, one on one, between student and Rotarian.

Fresh water wells in Western Africa, a sensory park in Germany, proms for disabled students across the United States and a research center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have more in common than merely being good deeds. All of the examples listed, and thousands of others, have one thing in common—they all started over a cup of coffee and a sandwich 100 years ago in Birmingham.
